Harmony Week  

This week we celebrated Harmony Week in the Library. Our students enjoyed stories focused on inclusivity and celebrating differences. Two of our stories focused on the culture of the Philippines. Mango Trees by Tae-yeon Kim shows the importance of the Mango Tree to the culture and Box of Dreams by Faith Kazmi details a mother and daughter packing a balikbayan box. This is a sharing box sent from other countries to family back in the Philippines, showing connection and generosity. The Harmony Bracelet activity was a hit. 

Routines 

Our focus this Term has been on the idea of connecting to stories whilst embedding and mastering the routines established last year of entry, exit and cue to start. Our new routines around voice level and sharing our learning through questions have been smoothly adopted by the classes. Students love sharing their experiences of life which connect with our stories in library. They appreciate it when we fairly take it in turns to share. 

Borrowing 

Our primary students have started the year off with very strong borrowing habits.  We are fortunate as a college to be able to offer a weekly opportunity to borrow from a well-resourced library. We know that reading for enjoyment is the single most important indicator of a child's academic success. We continue to strive to offer a varied and interesting range of books for our students to read and encourage all of our students to engage with a book every week. Here are some of the new titles this month.  

There is a new series by Andrew Daddo about a dog called ‘Bitza’. There are 2 books in this series. The other set is by Mary Fowler, soccer star for Manchester and the Matildas. They include Mary’s Game and Beach Party. If you love words, you’ll like the new Sunny and Storm by Tanya Hennessy where two nine-year-old best friends create new words while solving a crime they are accused of committing.
