Let's Talk Careers

The A-Z of Gen Z

Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, are the cohort of people born between 1997 and 2012. They are the most diverse, educated and digitally savvy generation in history – growing up in a world of rapid change, social media and global challenges such as climate change, terrorism and pandemics. They are also the first generation to have no memory of a world before the internet and smartphones. And they are, of course, our students!

What do Zoomers want from their careers?

Generation Z are not motivated by money or status alone. They want to find meaning and purpose in their work, and to make a positive impact on the world. They value flexibility, autonomy, and creativity, and seek opportunities for learning and growth. They are also keen to balance their work and personal lives, and to pursue their passions and hobbies outside of work.

What are the challenges they face?

Generation Z face a number of challenges in the labour market, such as increased competition, automation, and uncertainty.

They also have to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disrupted their education, employment, and mental health. They may struggle to find stable and secure jobs, and to develop the skills and networks they need to succeed. They may also face discrimination and stereotypes from older generations, who may not understand or appreciate their values and perspectives.

What are the opportunities they have?

Generation Z have many opportunities to shape the future of work, and to leverage their strengths and talents. They are adaptable, resilient, and innovative, and can thrive in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

They are also digital natives, and can use technology to communicate, collaborate, and create. They have access to a wealth of information and resources, and can learn new skills and knowledge anytime, anywhere. They are also global citizens, and can connect with diverse people and cultures, and contribute to solving global problems.

Our shining example

One of the key factors that can help Generation Z find fulfilling and rewarding careers is self-awareness. By understanding their traits, abilities, interests, and values, they can identify the pathways that suit their personality and goals.

For example, Emily Everett, a Year 11 student on the APEx pathway, is a National level diver and someone who likes to learn by doing. She decided to pursue a School Based Traineeship in Sports and Recreation, where she could combine her passion for sport with practical skills and qualifications. She has flourished in this environment and has made it to the State finals of the trainee awards! Emily's story shows how self-awareness can lead to success and satisfaction in one's career.
