Cross Country

In the final week of Term 2 a group of boys went to the Southern Metropolitan Region Cross Country. Previously having qualified at the Beachside event at our local Karkarook Park the 12 students travelled down the Peninsula with Mr Marnell and Mr Gibson. All competitors ran an admiral race of 3000m with Christian S. qualifying for the State Final, in a time of 10:15.53. What an amazing effort!

Shortly upon the commencement of Term 3 Christian competed in the School Sport Victoria, Cross Country State Final at the Yarra Valley Racecourse. It was a cold, wet, and muddy day, which hampered runners from all age groups and schools. Having to steady himself on some tricky, slippery corners Christian ran the 3km in 14 minutes.  We congratulate Christian, who already has great intentions for next year's event.

Intermediate Sport

Thank you to the staff members who began Intermediate Sport preparations at the end of Term 2. This helped planning the events a smooth process. We had four non-P.E. staff members take an Intermediate sport, which is fantastic. We also had five senior students supporting our staff members with their teams, making Interschool Sport a great school community event.  If there are any parents or friends of Chelt.Sec who would like to join our sport community please get in touch.

This term our Year 7-10 students have the options of Basketball, Table Tennis, Hockey, and Futsal.  Basketball being the most popular this term, it was great to have senior students Rudi, Ashton, and Charlie help with tryouts and training sessions as well as game day preparations.

Futsal Girls had a fun day out, though not much game time. It is difficult to rely on our opposition schools to fill sides. Mia N., after a well-earned rest from playing Avenues College was the Most Valuable Player.  Futsal Boys had a very even but competitive day at Albert Park Indoor with two wins and two losses. Huge thank you to senior students Mika and Travis who assisted the team and were a great support to Ms Bakas and Mr Chan.

Since Mr Paul Smart joined Chelt.Sec a few years ago, every year and for every year level, he volunteers to coach a hockey team. Unfortunately, we never have enough students sign up to play...until now! Not only did we have the numbers this year we also had some experienced hockey players. Sign-ups for Intermediate Boys Hockey were really positive at the end of Term 2 and on the back of his performance at Avenues, we had no hesitation in bringing up Year 7 student Julian to make up the numbers, and with him came fellow Year 7 student Alessio. We were finally going to put a hockey team on the pitch (Ms Hargreaves - pretty excited).

On Tuesday we headed to Melbourne High School to play hockey, for the first time in a really long time. There were three teams in the competition and fortunately for us Chelt.Sec were given the first bye. While some students were hockey players most of the team had only picked up a hockey stick in P.E. classes. This one hour training session was valuable practice and planning time.

Our first game was against our hosts, Melbourne High, who in the opening game beat Albert Park 8-0. Melbourne are an experienced hockey school that never has trouble entering hockey teams in Interschool Sports, this would be a tough competition. Melbourne may have underestimated our grit and determination to give everything a go and that's exactly what our boys did.  With a mixed bag of experience, Chelt.Sec held Melbourne High to a 0-0 draw and not without some scoring opportunities and near misses. Chelt.Sec went on to defeat Albert Park 3-0. As runners-up in the competition Melbourne High recommended we play in the regional event in October should there be a gap in the draw. I am happy to report that we have received and accepted the invitation.

Volleyball Three Day Comp 24th - 26th July

Volleyball has taken Cheltenham Secondary College by storm in the last year or so. It has quickly grown into one of the most popular sports in the school. Congratulations to the team captains for their initiative and organisation in seeking out the best events. Thank you to Mr Chan for his participation in the three-day competition, such a great commitment that the teams really appreciate, here is his report...

Year 10, 11, and 12 volleyball players are participating in the Volleyball Victoria Three Day Schools Cup at the State Volleyball Centre in Dandenong.

Year 10

Year 10s came out flying with a convincing two straight set win to start the competition. A close second game which saw the boys lose in a close third set saw their record for Day 1 sitting at 1 win - 1 loss.

They came strong again on Day 2, showing their skills and determination to win both their games 2 sets to 0.

The Year 10s are playing the finals having finished 2nd place in their group with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

Year 11

Year 11s had a shaky start after missing a few key players due to injury. In the first game, the boys managed to claw back and win the first set after finding themselves behind. Two close sets saw the boys lose the game 1 set to 2. In the next game the Year 11s bounced back from their previous games loss and dominated to win the game 2 sets to 0. Day 1 ends with 1 win and 1 loss.

On Day 2, again a strong start saw the boys come out swinging with another 2 sets to 0 win. Later in the day, going off their recent performance held out in a must win game, winning 2 sets to 0.

The Year 11s finish 2nd in their group and advance into the finals with a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

Year 12

The Year 12s had a shaky start to the competition, maybe a sign of rust which saw a less than ideal first set in the first game. The boys were quick to adjust in the break and won the second set. The boys continued to use their winning momentum but came up short in a close third set. Game 2 saw the boys come up against a strong and confident opposition. The boys valiantly defended, getting balls up the best they could however couldn’t get it done in the 2 close sets. Day 1 ends at 0 wins - 2 losses.

On Day 2,  the boys had their third and last game before finals, coming up against another strong team. The boys defended as well as they could, but the opposition's strong offensive plays were too much and the boys lost 2 sets to 0.

Today (Friday) sees an opportunity for the Year 12s to secure a win in their last school cup in a very winnable fixture.

It was great to see former student Zavier Lam (2023 graduate) around as he helped organise the school cup as well as helping coach our teams. The boys are always happy to see him around and turn to him for volleyball advice.

All the boys over the 3 days have demonstrated their teamwork, resilience, and personal best and should congratulate themselves on an amazing school cup.

Thank you

Gaspar Chan.
