NAIDOC Week
Throughout Week 11 of Term 2 the school celebrated NAIDOC week in various ways. From the front of the school we displayed an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Hall of Fame showcasing famous and prominent Indigenous Australians
On Tuesday we celebrated as a school community for a NAIDOC Week Liturgy. We acknowledged and celebrated the achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We also acknowledged 2023 St Helena’s graduate, Donald, whose artwork is on our new staff shirt, banners and other places around our school, and presented his Nan with a shirt.
Students celebrated and learnt about some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have made a difference in our community. One of the people they studied was Jade Dolman who runs J.D. Penangke, a First Nations business. She is a Whadjuk, Ballardong, Arrernte artist specialising in murals and public art. They looked at some of Jade’s murals, including the one at Midland Gate, and had a go at creating a whole school chalk mural celebrating NAIDOC Week.
One of our talented Year Five students, Maddi, created and presented our school with a painting she created with the guidance of her mum. She even wrote the story behind the painting.
“St Helena’s is a meeting place where we learn.
We have been welcomed here, this beautiful place which we have been filled with life and the love of God.
St Helena’s Catholic Primary School places Jesus Christ at its centre.
I am proud to be a part of St Helena’s community where my culture is welcomed. “
We are so lucky to have such talented and kind students at St Helena’s.
