Saint Mary MacKillop
Australia's First Saint - Feast Day 8th August
On her Feast Day, today, we reflect on the extraordinary life of St Mary MacKillop, who was known for her deep faith, resilience, and profound compassion.
May we look to Mary MacKillop as a beacon of light, guiding us towards a life of service and kindness.
Born in 1842 in Melbourne, Australia, Mary MacKillop was the eldest of eight children in a devout Catholic family. From a young age, she showed an awareness of the struggles faced by the less fortunate and she was determined to make a difference in the lives of others.
Mary founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866 and was instrumental in establishing schools, orphanages, and charitable institutions across Australia and New Zealand.
She was deeply committed to social justice and tirelessly advocated for the marginalized. Her compassion was endless and she provided support and care to those in need, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Her mantra was, "Never see a need without doing something about it." Let these words guide us in our daily lives as we continue to build a world that reflects her spirit of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication by Being the Light to others.
The senior students enjoyed researching about the life of Mary McKillop and chose a quote from her that meant something to them.
