TERM 4 INQUIRY

This term in Inquiry, the Foundation students have studied a science unit about life and the Animal World. This is such an exciting topic for the students and they are always eager to extend their knowledge in this area! They investigated what is classified as living and non-living and have leant about what living things need to successfully survive, including themselves.

Throughout the Term, students were introduced to the idea that animals live in different places where their basic needs (including food, water and shelter) are met, and that animals have a variety of external features to suit their environment. They have explored a variety of habitats such as the ocean, rainforests, deserts and snow and looked at the different animals that live in these environments.

During the course of this Inquiry Unit of work, some of the questions they have explored are:

How do we know if something is alive?

What do animals need to stay alive?

What are some different types of animals that we know of?

How do we classify (sort) them?

How do animals interact?

What do animals eat?

What features help animals to survive in their habitat?

How do animals move? How does this help them survive?

What are the basic needs of humans? How do these needs compare to the needs of other animals?

The students then chose an animal that interested them. They then created a diorama that demonstrated their understanding of what their chosen animal needed to survive; habitat, shelter, water and food. They had a fantastic time creating their dioramas and the results were amazing.

MYUNA FARM EXCURSION

To celebrate their amazing term of learning, the Foundation students had a fantastic day visiting Myuna Farm last Friday. It was a beautiful sunny day and the children had a fantastic time. We began the day with a snack and then our instructors Shona and Georgia took us to see a show where we met Kevin the rooster and Henny Penny the hen. The students then had an opportunity to milk a goat!

We then broke off into two groups and were given the opportunity to do a number of different activities including a ride on a pony!

They fed some farm animals.

They went on a tractor train ride through wetlands and saw thousands of fruit bats hanging in the trees!

They also had the opportunity to met some very cute baby animals and pat lizards and turtles.

Thank You and Merry Christmas!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and assistance throughout the year. It has been such a joy watching your children grow and learn in this first year of their school journey. We will miss each and every one of them - we look forward to seeing them around the school yard.
