What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:

Over past few weeks, the Foundation students have completed a unit around striking, passing and ball control. The sport which was played in these lessons was soccer. The students' worked in small group to practise toe stops, dribbling and passing. Once this was complete, they applied the learned skills to a set obstacle course.

To conclude each lesson, we played a game of Block Soccer which allowed the students to further extend their learning in a match scenario.

The Foundation Student's also completed their health task for the term which focused on identifying what Respect, Responsibility and Resilience looks, sounds and feels like in sport. It was great to see the students come up with some different words, phrases and pictures to describe these areas.

Year One/Two:

Over past few weeks, the Level 1 students have completed a unit around striking, passing and ball control. The sport which was played in these lessons was soccer. The students worked in small group to practise toe stops, dribbling and passing. Once this was complete, they applied the learned skills to a set obstacle course.

To conclude each lesson, we played a game of Block Soccer which allowed the students to further extend their learning in a match scenario.

The Level 2 began a unit on invasion games which worked on enhancing the student's teamwork and strategy skills. The two games that were played were Yoshi and Thief. Both games had similar learning intentions where students had to invade the opposition half without being tagged. The purpose of these games is to teach the students that strategising and being a selfless team member will help you succeed.

Year Three/Four:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 3-4 students participated in a variety of sports whilst also completing their health task for the term.

The students concluded their last softball lesson with Gecko sports where they played a full-scale match and were given the opportunity to apply all the learned skills from the previous two weeks. The student's striking skills were incredible. The teamwork on display was also impressive to watch.

The next lesson provided the students with the opportunity to engage with the sport Lacrosse. As our time was scarce, we commenced the lesson with practising some of the key skills (scooping, catching and passing), before we moved into a modified game. The best part about these lessons was the student's ability to work with their team. For those who know Lacrosse the sport is very fast paced and challenging.

Our next lesson saw us focus on a health topic. The students learned about the healthy food pyramid and the categories that make-up each section. The students then had to draw foods they eat and list them in the correct sections.

Year Five/Six:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 5-6 students participated in a variety of sports whilst also completing their health task for the term.

The students explored the health issues smoking presents to the body. They watched a video with information around health issues and remedies to help improve health problems caused by smoking. The students then had a choice to work with a partner or on their own to complete a comprehension worksheet on "The Dangers of Smoking".

Mountain Biking Elective

The selected 3-6 students have continued with their Mountain Bike elective with the focus being applying all their learned skills to some free riding. The students were given the opportunity to create their own obstacle course using equipment from the gym. This course challenged their steering control, braking ability, gear changing and speed.

Our next session saw us continue without free riding plan except we toured around the school, going up and down hills, over bumps in the ground and turning around corners with blind spots.

State Hooptime:

On Thursday 7th December, eight of our 34 students represented our school at the Future Stars State Hooptime Tournament. After success at the Region tournament, we knew that if we brought the same intensity and team-first mentality, we would be very competitive. We started the day off on a good note with a convincing win before coming up against a stronger opposition which we drew with. Following that game, we regrouped and found the form that had got us to this point and came away with another good win. Our last round robin game saw us come up against the team sitting on top of the table. We started the game off very strongly and continued on from that point. Even when challenged, we responded and came away with another fantastic to win. This win saw us finish on top of the table and progress to the finals.

Finals posed another challenge for the team but every time another team asked the question of the players, they answered back with flying colours. The team won their first two finals and progressed to the state championship game.

Unfortunately, the team went down by five points in the decider but in the eyes of those present and mine, we were the best team in the state. The way the students conducted themselves collectively, their resilience and respect over each tournament was nothing short of amazing.

For a school our size to place 2nd in the whole state out of 750 other teams is a tremendous effort and something we as a school can be so proud of.

Congratulations to everyone involved, a wonderful experience and a fantastic achievement. GO USPS
