Student Voice

Student Voice : Springvale Campus

We just can’t believe that there are only three and a half weeks of school left!

Our teachers have been trying to make the last weeks of school the BEST ONES ever before we farewell our Year 6s to start their new EXCITING journey into high school. Term 4 has been filled with incredibly positive achievements and experiences. Once again, the students are SMASHING success criteria one by one and EXCELLING in their learning. Did I mention that this term is BURSTING with LOTS of new upcoming events and excursions? We are going to be talking about our recent highlights and trust me, you ARE going to be flabbergasted and your jaw will drop to the floor.

Please stay tuned!

Our Remarkable Reading Goal Achievements

In the SLC, the students have been learning how to synthesise information and how to use it to make a descriptive reader's notebook. Some of the texts that they have been reading include Video Assistant Referee (VAR) learning, Panda Diplomacy, Healthy Eating and the effects of social media on mental health. They have been practising over and over to get better at this skill, so much that they have excelled in reading and have crafted terrific readers' notebooks! We can definitely confirm this because when teachers checked their PAT score for reading, their growth has been exceptional. With these results teachers, can know where students are at in their learning and what they need to teach next. Besides learning to synthesise, they were tasked with merging their ideas to include what they learnt after reading the text and whether or how it changed their understanding.

We interviewed a few students on what they thought about this reading topic. Here's what they said!

I loved learning about synthesising because my teacher explained it in an engaging way to make it fun! -Selena 5/6F

I liked discovering new facts and the strategies we used helped me get a better understanding of the text I was reading! -Brian 5/6F

Maths Accomplishments

For Maths, our SLC students are engaging in a new maths topic which is DIVISION! We have been using MAB to support our understanding of how to divide 3 and 4 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers. We have shown excellence in this topic, so much that we are now working on doing it without any additional materials. It is FASCINATING to see how much we have grown from the start of the week all the way up to now. Some students have also been able to turn the remainder into a fraction or a decimal including representing recurring and terminating decimals. As well as this, some students have been working on the last success criteria which is learning to solve real life problems and justifying the strategy they used. We interviewed a few students on what they thought and here is what they said!

"I liked doing long division because I got to show my working out without using MAB at all!" -Mey Jing 5/6D

Our Wonderful Writing Achievements

Another highlight of the past 2 weeks is …… WRITING! The SLC students have been preparing for Graduation by making graduation books, selecting their own quotes that represents them best and practising their song for the ceremony. While on the other hand, the Year 5 students have been crafting up leadership speeches to present to their peers. The successful students (and I don’t envy the selection committee!) will have to opportunity to build their leadership skills by leading our assemblies, attending special sessions such as the Children's Advisory Group and the Junior Advisory Group. They will be part of amazing groups that help the City of Greater Dandenong make our school and local environment a better place to live, learn and work on. Good luck to all the applicants. In our eyes you all will make fine leaders!

"I am really keen on getting in the first group of leaders because I want to help children learn more so they can excel in their future!" -Amin 5/6D

"I want to be chosen to be in the first group of leaders because I want to encourage all students to share their voice and on what they think." -Nana 5/6D

Upcoming Special Events/Conclusion

Yes there is only a few weeks to go, but we still have quite a few upcoming special events. These include, LSV Beach Excursion on the 30th of November, Graduation on the 14th of December, End of Year Assembly and Awards Presentation on the 15th of December and the Last Day of School on the 20th of December!

It’s nearly the end of the school year; a time to reflect and celebrate all of our learning achievements. New classrooms, new teachers and for some of us (eg. Year 6s) …new schools!

Looking forward to sharing the final highlights with you very soon!

"I liked dividing 4 digits by 1 digits mentally because it was a challenging event where I got to practise using efficient mental strategies !" -Junu 5/6D

Fabulous FLC Transition Event

For the past 4 weeks, we have had FLC Transitions happening in the FLC classrooms. If you didn't know, FLC Transitions is a time where students going to Springvale Rise Primary School next year get to see their new classmates, teachers and classroom. They have had a lot of fun doing this; so much so that they are very excited to go to school next year. The FLC teachers have helped with this event so much, spending their own time to decorate the classrooms and setting out fun activities for the children to use. We would like to say a huge thanks to Miss Westra, Miss Wallace, Mrs Vamvas and Mrs Ktenas for all of their hard work and dedication that they put into making it an unforgettable moment for the kindergarten students! Besides having teachers helping, some of the Year 5 student leaders came out and helped the students feel very welcomed. So we would also like to do a big thanks to our student leaders too! We can't wait to see you guys next year in your classrooms.

Eat A Rainbow Week!

Just recently, our students have been engaging in ‘Eat A Rainbow Week’. They have had to bring a fruit or a vegetable every day for a week that represents each colour of the rainbow, and whichever class gets the most points will be rewarded with a free pizza making session! Yum!.... Not only is this program fun and engaging, but it also gives us an opportunity to consume a variety of nutrients we need so we can feel healthy and ready to learn.  So far it has been a huge success, we’ve never seen everyone so competitive before! We interviewed some students and here are their responses…

“I think this program is amazing due to the fact that students are filling up their body with nutrients and vitamins”- Ruthwik 5/6F

“I think this program is fantastic because it encourages students to bring more healthier foods so their body can function properly” - Rizwanar 5/6F

“I think we should all engage in this because it is important that our body is full of energy and ready for school”         – So Dyi 5/6F

A big thank you to our SRC captains and the wonderful Mrs Bertrand for hosting this spectacular program!!
