Year Five

Over the past six weeks in Year Five, we've thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This heartfelt story follows the journey of a young boy named August, who was born with a facial difference, as he starts school and navigates the complexities of friendships and family life.

Our in-depth study of Wonder involved daily reading sessions, during which we kept track of our thoughts and answered questions in our notebooks. A standout aspect of our experience was having our teachers read the text aloud, creating opportunities for us to share our reactions, discuss key themes, and experience the story's major plot twists together as a class.

This week, we celebrated finishing the book by watching the movie adaptation of Wonder. As we watched, we noted a few differences between the novel and the film, which led to meaningful reflections on how deeply a text allows us to understand characters -something a movie cannot fully capture.

Reading Wonder has been one of the most impactful learning experiences in Year Five. It has taught us valuable lessons about disability inclusion, friendship, kindness, and courage that we will hopefully keep in mind as we continue to mature as ‘Leaders in the Making’.
