Library News

As the Louise Humann Library awaits the appointment of a new Head of Library, the library team is working hard to make sure everything is running smoothly, helping and supporting students and staff with their enquiries and requests.

Semester 2 has seen the library continue to be busy at recess and lunchtime with students using the space to catch up on schoolwork, play chess or cards, read, or just generally hanging out. The library has a buzz to it with everyone enjoying a warm respite from the icy mornings and cold wintry days.

Japan Club

Every Friday lunchtime students have been enjoying everything Japanese with Japan Club in HUM4. A huge thank you to library and Japanese staff member Ariene for generously sharing her gifts and knowledge with this activity. A growing number of students are loving the amazing cultural experiences from a live Japanese Tea Ceremony to making origami to fun with traditional Japanese games. Keep an eye out for what is happening in Japan club each week on the student bulletin.

Genre-Based Fiction Sections

The students visiting the library will notice the fiction area is now grouped in genres, such as sport, fantasy, adventure, mystery etc. Generifying the fiction collection allows students to easily browse and access a novel of interest.

Our aim is that students can easily find a book that they will enjoy reading and in turn help to foster a love of reading. There are many proven benefits from consistent reading as it exercises your brain, increasing knowledge and thinking skills along with reducing stress and developing empathy.

We thank Genevieve Shepherd, the Head of Library for Term 2, for leading this project, and for generously sharing her talents in the short time here. Signage to highlight the bookshelves and different genres, is being prepared, so stay tuned for the final reveal.

Displays

The wonderful library assistant Erin has created some amazing displays for staff and students to enjoy and engage with. Some displays link with the curriculum such as the English Year 9 Choose Your Own Text program or showcases national events such as Anzac Day to the recent Cookie Monster who loves bookies and wants overdue library books!

We’ve had students from Year 12 laugh and reminisce over the funny blue Sesame Street character, wishing they had an overdue book to return!

Overdue Library Books

We ask that parents please check at home for library books and remind students to visit the library to return books. The library is open every morning from 8.00am to 4:30pm Monday to Thursday and 4.00pm Fridays, so students can race in and return books through the day.

Book Week

The month of August is a busy month for the library and jam packed full of special library days to celebrate all the wonderful things libraries have to offer communities and patrons. We recently celebrated Book Week in the library with a focus on the book The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The library staff enjoyed welcomed students and staff into the library with a focus on creating positive connections with books and fostering a love of reading.

The theme for Book Week is Reading is magic, and there’s been lots of chatting with students and staff about the book that hook them into reading, their all-time favourite and current read.

We will leave you to think about what much loved and well-read book you have or had as a child. The one that ignited your passion for reading, took you on a wonderous childhood journey, or reminds you of a time when little ones snuggled in to listen in wonder of a story.

Go find that book, relive the joy in reading, share it with your children and discover how Reading is Magic!
