Year 12 Numeracy - Running Community Events
The Year 12 VM numeracy students have been busy organising a community event. Within their two class groups, they decided to run a Gaming Tournament and a Sausage Sizzle, with the profits going to the charity Fusion for Youth Homelessness.
The key goals of this numeracy task are to establish a budget, costings, timelines, and predictions on the event's profitability and to determine the overall profit made.
Both events were successful at different levels, but the discussions on improving in the future were very informative.
Year 11 Numeracy - Water Rockets
The Year 11 numeracy students have been researching water rockets. Through the NASA rocket launch simulations program, they have gained a greater understanding of location, direction, and data analysis. They have also predicted the likelihood of launches with different amounts of water and pressure in the rockets.
The students are now making their water rockets in groups of four. Once completed, we will take them to the oval to test their designs.
The year that was…a School Based Traineeship (SBAT) reflection
As a junior, I never foresaw myself engaging in Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) within a trade. Transitioning into my final year of schooling, I had limited options due to needing to complete TAFE hours in the previous year. Fortunately, I was allowed to complete my Certificate II in Conservation and Ecosystem Management. I began the class with no idea of what to expect. Being among the few girls in the class, I initially felt intimidated. As a strong-minded individual, I was still determining how I would be perceived by the boys, knowing that women in trades are less common.
However, all my doubts were dispelled, as I was given the same opportunities as everyone else and could make my own decisions. I felt empowered, knowing that my standards were the same as those of others. As I learned new skills, I grew physically and mentally stronger, and this was made possible due to the VM program, which opened my eyes to the possibility of pursuing a trade career.
NATIONAL TREE DAY
Week 2 was National Tree Day in the VM Program. In 1996, Planet Ark's National Tree Day became Australia's most significant community tree planting and nature care event. The program serves as a call to action for all Australians to participate actively in environmental conservation and community enhancement.
In support of this cause, SBAT students currently studying Conservation and Ecosystems partnered with Ballam Park Primary students to plant trees at both the primary school and McClelland Secondary College. Thanks to everyone involved, as with all activities in the VM space, a collaborative effort was required to ensure success.
