McClelland College Science Program
Year 11 Environmental Science Excursion
On a sunny morning, Year 11 students embarked on an excursion to Little Boggy Creek Reserve. The outing was part of their VCE Environmental Science curriculum, aimed at exploring the health of aquatic ecosystems by studying macroinvertebrates. Students were equipped with nets, magnifying glasses, and collection buckets to collect samples and document their findings carefully. The field trip enhanced students’ understanding of aquatic ecology and emphasized preserving natural local habitats. By engaging directly with the environment, students gained a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of ecosystems and the impact of human activities on water quality.
“As a class, we traveled by bus to Boggy Creek to study the macroinvertebrates that inhabit the area. In pairs, we collected water samples, and using magnifying equipment, we recorded the plethora of species we observed and used that data to determine the health of the aquatic environment. Overall, it was a very beneficial experience for our class.” – Carter Riches.
Stick Insects
The Science Department is excited to announce the arrival of stick insects, which Ballam Park Primary generously donated. This partnership has provided our students with a unique hands-on learning opportunity. Our Year 9/10 Science Inquiry students have been actively involved in setting up a suitable habitat for the stick insects. Regular care and monitoring of the stick insects will teach students about their life cycle and foster teamwork and responsibility.
