On Friday 9 August, the Wantirna community celebrated something special. Following weeks of work and collaboration, our VCE VM Literacy students welcomed the residents from Wantirna Views Aged Care to finally present them with their biographies.
This has been a focus in VCE VM Literacy and students have met with our friends at Wantirna Views several times to listen to their life stories and write their biographies.
The Experiential Cycle is a key component of the VCE VM Literacy study design. Understanding the importance of community links has been a priority for our students in applied learning. Key literacy skills such as asking the right questions to gather information, listening, notetaking, drafting and editing and completing digital biographies were developed throughout the unit.
As well as our guests, we also had some parents and staff members attend our presentation and it was a great honour to also have Ms. Brianna Bloomfield from Knox Council to be part of this special moment.
The Wantirna Views residents were delighted to meet with the students again and receive their biographies and all the students agreed that it was rewarding experience.
During the morning tea there was time for meaningful conversations. It was wonderful to see the respect, kindness and enthusiasm that our VCE VM Literacy students displayed.
A big thank you to Leanne Nash from Wantirna Views, for helping to coordinate the visits and supporting all our programs over many years.
We would also like to thank the residents from Wantirna Views, Ron Jende, Erik Silkirk, Maree Simpson, Colleen Jackson, and Margaret Patterson for walking to the College and supporting our students with this learning task.
Thank you to Emily Warry’s Mum, Sarah Warry, for her presence on the day and to our staff Darren Hoogkamer, Leanne Wilson, Fiona Tan, Steven Daw, Kate Ci, our librarians Jo Montgomery and Andrea Daniels, and Nicholetta Rigano for your support.
