Secondary
Dear Families
At yesterday’s Secondary assembly, 2025 College Captain candidates presented their aspirations and insights in response to the following statement: What does it mean to be a leader following in the Ignatian tradition? Their speeches were authentic and passionate, sharing powerful messages on the essence of servant leadership and how, to be a leader at John XXIII College, one must always give their best and strive to achieve the best for others. What impressive role models they, and other students who have nominated for a formal leadership role in 2025 have been for their peers. By putting themselves forward to serve others and be a positive influence in our community, they have chosen courage over comfort. While not all will be successful in their endeavours as Student Representative Councillors next year, they have demonstrated that they are all leaders in their own right, and we have great confidence that they will be impressive people for others next year.
The Year 11 leadership process is intentionally rigorous and conducted throughout Term 3 to support candidates’ growth and readiness for a formal leadership position if successful. This involves staff interviews, candidate speeches for College Captain and House Captain portfolios, voting by students and staff and a final interview to determine College Captains. To date, all candidates have conducted themselves with integrity and should be proud of their commitment to the process. Successful candidates will be announced early Term 4 at the Day of Invitation Assembly; we wish every nominee the very best for the remainder of the process.
As we head towards finals for the netball season, I wish to take the opportunity to thank our Netball Coordinator, Milissa Jaggers, for her years of dedicated service to the John XXIII Netball Club. Under her leadership, Milissa has been the driving force not only behind the Club’s expansion to be the largest club in the Perth Netball Association, but, more importantly the development of a Club culture that encourages participation, enjoyment, comradery and positive sporting spirit. This week’s Secondary and Primary wind-ups provided the ideal opportunity to farewell and thank Milissa, who will finish at the Club at the end of the term, and to introduce Milissa’s successor – Dee Meier. A passionate netballer and Secondary teacher, Dee brings experience and enthusiasm to the role and is looking forward to meeting students and parents as she prepares for the 2025 season.
Congratulations to all students who competed in Wednesday’s Years 9 and 10 NAS Winter Carnival. The revised One-Day NAS carnival format has been highly successful for our College, providing students with the opportunity to represent the College competitively whilst also ensuring full student participation in a sport or alternative physical activities. My sincere thanks are extended to Ms Jess Pillera (Head of Sport), Mr Darren Kowal (Assistant Head of Sport), all staff managers and coaches, and our Assistant Deputy Principals for their efforts to make this revised competition an enjoyable and successful experience for students.
Huge congratulations to our Year 8 team of Henry, Luke, Zachary and Christopher for advancing to the Western Australian Debating League Grand Final on Monday evening against Perth Modern High School. Wishing you every success, boys!
All the best to students performing this evening for our annual Spring Soiree and to Year 9 staff and students on Year 9 camp next week, and wishing all dads and father figures a special Fathers’ Day on Sunday.
2025 Student Diaries
Whilst the student diary is a valuable tool to support students’ organisation and time management with their learning program, a recent review indicates that a portion of students are not using their diary as they have alternative means of organisation. In keeping with our commitment to sustainability, we will continue to provide diaries to Years 7 and 8 students to support the development of important organisational skills and offer diaries to students in Years 9 to 12 who wish to continue using the student diary next year. Please complete the link below to order a College provided diary for your student who will be in Years 9 to 12 in 2025.
Helping others in our Community: Roncalli Care
The Roncalli Roster is a College community-operated pastoral care program that facilitates the delivery of home-cooked meals to members of the College community experiencing hardship and loss. The primary purpose of the roster is to provide meals while maintaining the privacy and anonymity of the recipients and volunteers alike, in a timely and consistent manner. If you or someone you know could benefit from the service provided by the Roncalli Roster, please get in contact through emailing Roncalli@johnxxiii.edu.au. Please note, consent is required from the meal recipient before the roster can begin.

Languages Week
This week, we celebrated Languages Week. Languages Week is always a joyous occasion when the lower school classes combine and share their love of learning a second language. Language learning enables a greater understanding of the diversity of cultures and languages in the world, which brings tolerance, compassion, and empathy.
Each year group eagerly participated in a range of activities. The week commenced with the reverent Hail Mary, said by the Year 12 ATAR Language students in Japanese, Italian, and French.
The Year 7s battled it out in teams of four, in a relay style in our version of the 'Giro d’Italia'. This consisted of the Japanese and Italian teams racing around the netball courts on scooters. The Year 7 Japanese students wore their 'hachimaki' headband with pride and courage, and the Year 7 Italian students displayed their tricolori beaded bracelets. Well done to the Year 7 students for making chants and eagerly cheering on their peers.
Year 8s were engaged by Simon Sensei, originally from Taiko in the mountains of Nagano, Japan, who led them in powerful rhythms, teamwork and movements on drums. The students were able to learn more about the Japanese use of drums and the connection it has with the Japanese history and culture. Year 9s participated in quizzes about Japan and Italy and explored different cultural and historical facts and myths. Year 10s designed their own eco-friendly bags with catchy Language slogans and colours of either Japan, Italy or France. Years 9-12 Language students were also treated to a yummy gelato.
ATAR upper school students are currently preparing for end-of-term assessments and examinations and will celebrate in a few weeks by sharing a traditional Japanese, Italian, or French meal.
Thank you to all the teachers in the Languages department for a successful, engaging and interactive week of cultural games, interactions and exchanging of stories.
Year 8 Japanese Lunch
The Year 8 students of Japanese all received a very special obento meal in class so that they could practice what to say before a meal in Japanese (itadakimasu) and after a meal (gochisousama). In addition, they all practiced using chopsticks. The students really enjoyed this experience and most found the meal delicious (oishii).
Thank you to Glass Sensei and Aghdasi Sensei for providing this enriching yummy cultural experience.

The final NAS carnival of the year was a day filled with excitement and energy as students competed across a variety of sports, showcasing their talents and school spirit. Students enjoyed a wide range of activities, from high-energy Zumba, Volleyball, and Dodgeball to more relaxing options like beading and movie time. It was a perfect balance of competition and relaxation, making it a memorable day for everyone involved. A very big thank you to all staff involved in the planning and running of the day.
