What's Happening in the Senior School

Year 5
What’s Happening in Year 5 in Weeks 1 and 2
Two of our highlights this coming term are Winter Interschool Sports and our cooking for the Kitchen Garden program. We plan on baking ANZAC biscuits, picking apples and turning them into apple parcels, and finishing with muffins.
Wellbeing
In their 4Rs (Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships) wellbeing lessons, Year 5 students will investigate emotions. They will recognise positive, negative and mixed emotions.
Literacy & Language
The Year 5 students are delving into the novel Black Cockatoo (written by Indigenous Australian author, Carl Merrison) which was nominated for several literary awards. The story is set in a remote community in Australia’s Kimberley region, and focuses on 13-year-old Mia. She is disturbed to see her 15-year-old brother, Jy, becoming increasingly alienated from his community and culture, but feels powerless to do anything about it. In the book’s first chapter she rescues a young black cockatoo (dirrarn) which had been injured by Jy. The Year 5s will read and respond to questions and focus on their expression. In grammar, they will learn about fragments and sentences and use a range of conjunctions.
Maths
In Maths, the Year 5s will be exploring data representation.
Knowledge Unit
In Science, we will be investigating matter and sorting items depending on their properties. Our capability is Critical and Creative Thinking. Students will be evaluating evidence and giving reasons for their decisions. Later this term we will be exploring extreme weather and geological changes.
Homework
Please encourage and remind the children to read regularly. Our students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. Students need to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to record their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking these diaries to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders. Students have also all been sent home with Mathletics logins and allocated activities.
Year 6
What’s Happening in Year 6 in Weeks 1 and 2
What a fantastic first term Year 6 students had! From musical auditions to interschool sports and school tours, the students were involved in many exciting activities, with plenty of playtime enjoyed alongside their Prep buddies. We hope they’ve had a restful holiday, recharged and ready for the term ahead! We’re excited for another fun-filled term, packed with new concepts, extended learning, and plenty of exciting opportunities.
Wellbeing
Students will analyse the characteristics of a positive and healthy friendship, as well as explore strategies for resolving conflicts that may arise within friendships.
Literacy
The Year 6 students will begin a new spelling program called Word Origins, which will focus on exploring how words are formed by adding affixes to root words. In addition to building their spelling skills, students will delve into the etymology of words, gaining a deeper understanding of their meanings and historical development. As part of this program, they will also study influential speeches and dialogues throughout history, analysing how language has been used to persuade and inspire audiences over time.
Maths
Building on their prior understanding of time, students will deepen their knowledge through engaging and extended tasks that reinforce key concepts. Following this, the Year 6 students will shift their focus to studying fractions, where they will explore their applications and relationships in more detail.
Knowledge Unit
This term the Year 6’s Knowledge Unit topic is Civics and Citizenship. The big question that the students will strive to answer is ‘How can I be an active local, national and global citizen?’.
Homework
Students are expected to read for a minimum of 15-30 minutes, five times a week, to improve their reading skills. Additionally, they will receive Mathletics tasks every fortnight to reinforce and build on their mathematical knowledge.
Reminders
Cross Country – Tuesday 29th April – we'll be leaving school at 9:15 to go to Dendy St, Brighton by bus. Students are allowed to wear their House colour. Please be mindful that students need to be able to run in their outfits.
