Graeme Wood Shield

Grand Final, Thursday 3 April 2025

At The WACA

Mazenod College vs Newman College

On Thursday 3 April, Mazenod travelled down to one of the most iconic cricket venues in the land “The WACA”, to take on Newman College in the Graeme Wood Shield 20/20 cricket grand final.

The boys were full of excitement and nerves, to be on the big stage, in the grand final, and of course to play on a cricket ground that so many big national and international names had played on before them!

To start the day, Newman had the first win, winning the toss and electing to bat.

Newman started very quickly with the bat, hitting multiple boundaries during the powerplay and getting their team off to a good start. Mazenod then managed to tighten up the bowling on a bouncy pitch, which led to restricting Newman to 5 wickets for 119 runs off 20 overs. Pick of the bowlers were Captain Nate T with 2 wickets for 17 runs off 4 overs, and Cohen F 1 wicket for 15 runs off 4 overs.

Mazenod knew this was a very gettable target and were confident they could chase the runs down. With plenty of room in the big WACA outfield and the outfield like carpet, the runs were there to be made. However, batting under lights with a pink cricket ball was a new experience for a lot of the boys, and would definitely make things interesting and I’m sure challenging.

Mazenod’s innings got off to a good start with Year 12 openers Mitchell P and Thomas B, each hitting boundaries and hitting the ball nicely. As the 6 over powerplay was done though, wickets started to drop at a constant rate, and to Newman’s credit they bowled very tight and took wickets on regular occasions. None of Mazenod’s batsmen could get going and it led to Mazenod scoring 8 wickets for 76 runs off 20 overs. Mazenod’s top run scorer was Daniel W with 25 runs, with many other batters getting starts but not being able to get going.

All the boys were extremely disappointed but knew they had given it their best shot. They also loved the experience of playing at the WACA and to make the grand final 2 years in a row, which is a great achievement in itself. A big thankyou to the staff, students and parents who came and watched the game, your support is truly appreciated by all the players. As coaches, we are extremely proud of the boys and the way they conducted themselves throughout the tournament.

Congratulations!

Well done to T Davey on representing Western Australia in the national athletics competition being held in Perth last week. He placed 15th in the 1500m, 8th in the Steeplechase and 15th in the 800m.

Fantastic achievements given the standard of high competition.

Well Done!

This past weekend Aaden K took on his final Junior meet at the Swimming WA Junior LC States. Competing in 10 events, he stormed through with an astounding 9 Golds, 1 Silver, and smashed out 8 personal bests!

The Mazenod community congratulates Aaden in this outstanding effort and the dedication taken to get where he is today.
