🎓Careers

What’s Happening in Careers?

I attended the ECU Innovators and Educators Day on Friday 15 March. It was interesting to explore the Joondalup campus. ECU ranks among the best in Australia for teaching quality, skills development, student support, and overall experience in the Good Universities Guide. We had some great presentations from very passionate and qualified Learning Area Leads in Engineering, Education, and WAAPA. There was an update on the move to the city campus in 2026 that will house Business/Law, WAAPA, and Humanities. It sounds like this campus will be very vibrant with fabulous opportunities for connections within disciplines. A few takeaways for me:

  • It took me about 45 minutes to get to campus, but parking was free and plentiful. I was in my building within minutes of leaving my car.
  • It’s a smaller university and has a nice feel. The staff know the students.
  • The Computing and Information Systems school is ranked #1 in Australia for Overall educational Experience (Good Universities Guide 2024).
  • The Cyber security, Computer Sciences, Information Technology and Security and Intelligence study offers are developed in collaboration with industry, have state-of-the-art facilities including the only multimillion dollar Security Operations Centre in an Australian university.
  • The Business school is AACSB Accredited, which is an Internationally recognised accreditation and held by less than 6% of business schools globally.
  • They were also ranked as #1 for Quality in WA and #2 in Australia by the Financial Review in 2023. They have a paid internship with IBM as part of their degree.
  • The Engineering facilities are new and very comparable to those at larger universities. The Engineering school is much smaller and all Engineering disciplines are in one building.
  • The new sonography course is a great option for those considering a job in Health Sciences.

Year 10

Term 2 MyPath sessions are focused on preparing the Year 10s to make pathway and specific subject selections by the end of the term. They will be hearing from the Head of each learning area about the subjects on offer in their subject area. Students will get overviews of the course content, information about prerequisites and explanations of how these subjects can support them in pursuing careers in areas of interest. This week the boys had a presentation from English and Science. The PowerPoints for these presentations have been placed on the class OneNote for MyPath and are also on SEQTA, so you can review them at home and discuss the options.

Year 11

The Year 11 students started pathway planning this week. Pathway planning encourages students to explore, identify, evaluate, and reflect on the learning and work pathways available. Students will continue to be provided with opportunities to identify their aspirations, reflect upon their achievements, and set goals for continuing success. It will have been a busy end of term for the Year 11 group. We hope that the break comes at a good time for them to rest and reset as they continue on their pathway in Term 2.

Year 12

There are a number of great opportunities coming up for our students. The Careers Expo, 15-18 May, is a fantastic way for the boys to explore career options and we hope that they take advantage of this opportunity to attend. Those who have been in the past have found it to be a very useful experience and would recommend it. Make sure you register for free entry!
