VET Pathways & Workplace Learning Update

VET/WPL

One of the best parts of my job is being able to check out all the amazing opportunities available to our students. It’s super important to stay in the loop with what’s happening out there — from trending jobs to new training pathways — so we can pass on the most up-to-date info.

This year’s already been pretty full-on! I’ve been to the CDAA Conference at Notre Dame, the CEWA VET/Careers Networking Conference, and just this week, I had the chance to visit the Newmont Gold Mine in Boddington and Murray Engineering in Pinjarra with the WA Mining Club.

The visit to the Newmont Gold Mine provided valuable insights from industry professionals, including engineers, metallurgists, and occupational safety and health officers. I was particularly impressed by the mine’s use of autonomous truck fleets, showcasing cutting-edge advancements in mining technology. We also explored the gold extraction process and were given a guided tour of the plant’s processing operations.

At Murray Engineering, we engaged with experienced industry representatives and an apprenticeship coordinator, who highlighted the current areas of highest demand within the sector. These conversations offered a deeper understanding of where future employment opportunities lie.

What I’ve taken away from all these events is this: no matter what kind of career path you’re into, there are heaps of opportunities out there. You just need the motivation and drive to chase what you’re passionate about!

Expression of Interest – Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start)

We are pleased to share that the College of Electrical Training (CET) is now ready to begin the application process for the UEE22020 Certificate II in Electrotechnology (Career Start). This program provides an excellent foundation for students interested in pursuing a career in the electrical industry, including pathways to apprenticeships or further study.

Attached you will find the application details, which include key dates, eligibility criteria, and submission instructions. Students will also be required to complete a Readiness Assessment (RA) through the Energy Space platform, which measures literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving skills relevant to the trade which will be completed at school and online.

To support students in preparing for the RA, CET provide students with a Practice Assessment. Please note the Practice Assessment is optional, costs $20.00, and is payable via PayPal only.

The application process includes the following steps:

  1. Student completes the Expression of Interest (EOI) Form, including personal details, a short statement, and a parent/guardian signature.
  2. All completed paperwork is submitted to the School VET Coordinator
  3. The School VET Coordinator forwards all documents directly to CET

Please be aware that completing the EOI does not guarantee a place in the program at this stage.

If your child is interested in applying, please contact Lauren Johnson as soon as possible to express interest and receive further guidance on the application process. Deadline closes on 9 May.

Hospitality Skills

For the fourth time, our students have had the opportunity to attend the Perth Barista School, Earlier this week, our Year 11 and 12 students spent the day mastering the art of coffee-making. This hands-on experience has inspired many of our past students, who are now proudly working in cafés across the city. Keep an eye out for the City of Kalamunda free program, or otherwise, visit Yahava’s website for training dates in the Swan Valley.

In another exciting initiative, our ASDAN students recently participated in a special session with Education is Key, using the gym kitchen, now known as the ‘U Bean Kitchen’. This event marked the official launch of the program, where students completed Barista Training and earned their Safe Food Handling skillset. They showcased their learning by preparing delicious biscuits and freshly brewed coffees for staff using the ‘U Bean Coffee Cart’.

We extend our sincere thanks to the College Leadership Team and the Parent Association for their ongoing support of this valuable program. A special shout-out to Helen Botica and Claire Hughes for their dedication and efforts in making the day such a success. Their continued support makes a real difference in the lives of our students.
