Real World Learning in the PYP

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) encourages a deep connection between students’ learning and the real world. Through Units of Inquiry, students explore relevant global issues, allowing them to tackle real-world problems from multiple perspectives. These inquiries encourage critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration, empowering students to make meaningful connections to their lives and the world around them.

In Year 6 the current unit of inquiry provides opportunities to learn about how government systems work. During this unit, our students have been offered many opportunities for real-life experiences, such as an engaging and informative camp in Canberra, as well as guest speaker visits from Councillor Mia Shaw and Joanne Ryan MP. These experiences are designed to build deeper understandings of government systems, helping students make connections to their lives now and in the future, as they develop the knowledge and skills to become active, informed citizens.

Connecting Classroom Learning to the Real World

In Year 6, we have been learning about systems of government and how they impact on our local and national community. Meeting Ms. Shaw helped me understand the responsibilities of a mayor, including earning the respect of the community and ensuring the well-being of both people and places.

- Marvin 6A

We learnt that even if you can’t vote, you can make a difference in your community by taking action. Governments create laws to help the community. Government systems connect to our lives through rules and laws. For example, immigration laws can allow others to come and live in Australia

 - Hardik 6E

We have explored how government systems work and learned that without government, our country would not be as successful or safe. During camp, we studied the three levels of government and how the federal level operates. We also learned about how democracy works. Understanding these systems helps me better understand my rights and responsibilities as a citizen.
