Visual Arts

Last week in Visual Arts, students continued to explore the art element of colour through painting and colour mixing. Foundation students explored colours and colour mixing using watercolour paint. They followed step-by-step instructions to complete a colour wheel, starting with only the three primary colours—red, yellow, and blue. By carefully mixing these colours, they created the secondary colours—orange, green, and purple—to complete their own colour wheels. Year 1/2 and 3/4 students revisited the three primary colour - red, yellow, and blue, to assist them to complete a painted colour wheel. Students drew objects on a blank colour wheel that matched each colour, such as: red apple, green tree, yellow sun, blue iced donut, orange balloon. Students cut out their painted colour wheel wedges and pasted them onto their drawn colour wheel, creating their own interactive "flip and show" colour wheels. This hands-on activity was a fun and engaging way for students to reinforce their understanding of colour mixing and how primary colours combine to create secondary colours. Year 5/6 students continued working on their Sandra Silberzweig-inspired portrait art pieces, building on the skills they developed last week. In addition, they revisited colour mixing by creating an advanced colour wheel. Students started with primary colours (red, yellow, blue) to mix secondary colours (orange, green, purple) and then took it a step further by mixing secondary colours to create tertiary colours.

Culture Studies

This week in Culture Studies, students continued their exploration of Chinese culture, focusing on some of China’s most famous landmarks—The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City, and The Terracotta Army. They learnt about the significance of these landmarks and why they have become such important parts of history. After completing the landmarks section of their China booklets, students had the opportunity to be hands-on by creating their own terracotta statues using plasticine.

Ms. Zehra and I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday and a wonderful Easter break!

PE Program

As we move closer to our annual House Cross Country event, in the last week of term 1, the students in P-2 have had a focus on improving their running skills. This focus has been on looking straight ahead, rather than looking sideways to see how their friends are running, pumping their arms and lifting their knees high. These skills have been encouraged during running games including Fruit Salad and the kids favourite – race track game, where they are in teams and run around a rectangle area on a race track. It’s been exciting to see how quickly the students have picked up the skills and used them to improve their running. I am looking forward to seeing how they go at the House Cross Country event this week.

We also finished this week with a very exciting fun game of hungry hippos, where one student is on a roller board, while their partner pushes them backwards and forward to collect balls from the middle of the floor. Although this is a really fun, high energy game, it uses lots of strength and muscles to complete the activity which is great for students development. Also the teamwork and encouragement for each other has been amazing.

Our years 3-6 students have continued to play and develop their skills and knowledge of tee-ball. This is a great game to get everyone involved, and students have been able to pick up the skills quickly and then participate in a game. I have been excited to see how well the students have listened and followed instructions for safety reasons as well as hitting the ball and using their gloves.

Well done to everyone on a great term of PE and sport.

Enjoy the holidays and see you all next term.

Interschool Sports – Lightning Premiership

We finished the term of interschool sports for years 5-6, (with a few year 4 girls) with our lightning premiership. This is a great day for students to put their learning from the term together and compete against a number of other schools. It is also a great social day where students work with each other and their team to strive for a win. The laughter, fun and encouragement during the sports days and lightning premiership is awesome.

We had some mixed success, with the mixed (boys) teeball doing well to finish 3rd overall, the mixed (boys) tennis finishing first in Pool B, and a few wins from the other teams, including the girls tennis who had their first win for the term, great effort.

But a special mention must be made of the girls teeball team. Last year with predominantly the same girls, they got all the way to regionals and missed out on going to ‘State’ by just one run, so they are keen to try and go one step further this year. With that in mind, they have been practising so much and so eagerly that they were ready for the day. Needless to say they were outstanding. They played four games and won all four games. The total runs scores over the four games were Le Page scored 69 runs, while the other 4 teams together only scored 5 runs. This is an amazing effort. Congratulations to the girls for all their hard work and achievement. Thanks to Ms Anna for all her work throughout the term to support the girls.

The girls now go to the next round which is Kingston Division which will be held in the second week of term 3, on Friday August 1st. They can’t wait.

House Cross Country

We had a glorious afternoon on Wednesday to run our annual House Cross Country event next door at Le Page Park. This has become a great tradition of the school, coming together for this event at the end of term 1, to celebrate and cheers each other on as students run as hard as they can to complete the course.

We start with the Preps, 1s and 2s running one to two laps around the oval, which is exciting and we finish with the years 3-6 students running around the perimeter of the park on either a 2km or 3km circuit. The top three place getters from each race and gender receive a first, second or third ribbon, and everyone got a zooper dooper to celebrate the day.

We had some outstanding runners in each race, which is difficult to name them all, so I’ll just announce the first place getters for each race.

Congratulations to everyone for your efforts and especially to our top three runners in each race.

From these house sports a Le Page team of 23 students from Under 9/10 to Under 12+ have been selected to represent our school at the Kingston District Competition which will take place in week 3 of term 3 on Tuesday 6th May.

I would just like to thank all the parents and families that came along to support your child and the school and to all of our wonderful staff for helping out on the day. It was a great afternoon.

Thanks for a great term of PE and sport and have a great holiday.

Thank you for such a great term, everyone. A special thanks to the Library Captains Noah and Riley who have had such great ideas already and have helped amazingly, even running sessions themselves.

Next term, there are lots of different activities happening.

May is National Family Reading Month. In order to support this, we are running our second ever LePage Readathon, our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year and Simultaneous Storytime Day!

Keep your eyes open on compass and in the newsletter for more information about all of this.

Our Reader Leaders for term 1 were 34C with 183 books in term 1; and the student who borrowed the most was Yarik with 29 books.
