Our STEM Racing Teams Visit Melbourne's Formula 1 Grand Prix
"On Friday 14 March, Vincere STEM Racing team went to the F1 Paddock. A guide gave us a tour, pointing out garages and telling us about some of the logistics such as transport. After the tour, we looked out for drivers and eventually saw a crowd around the Ferrari garage. After a quick wait and some security guards, Charles Leclerc came out and signed our cars and shirts, shortly after, Lewis Hamilton came out. We all had a great time and are very thankful for the tickets.” Oliver S, Year 8
"It was an amazing day, we all arrived at gate 1 to get escorted under the track to the main area. After walking around for a while we headed to the paddock. We met so many cool drivers like Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton and some famous people like Crofty who is a F1 commentator and Adrian Portelli who was so amazing to chat with. It was such a fun day and filled so many of my dreams." Hugh J, Year 8 (Team Vincere)
Shrove Tuesday
To mark the beginning ahead of Lent on Ash Wednesday, our students and staff made and enjoyed pancakes for Shrove Tuesday.
During Lent, Christians give up rich foods that had butter, eggs, sugar and fat. Shrove Tuesday was the last chance to use up eggs and fats before fasting from those foods for the forty days of Lent, and pancakes are a perfect way of using up these ingredients.
Funds raised from pancake sales were donated to Caritas Australia. Thank you to all for their involvement.
Celebrating Student Achievement
Congratulations to our ACC Swim Team who completed an incredible six-time first place Championship yesterday!
"After taking a lead early in the day, we lost the lead just after halfway, and were able to finish the day strong to win. We had 5 relay wins for the day, showing the depth of the squad and the efforts in training really paying off. Winning 6 years in a row is an outstanding feat for our students, meaning this year's seniors have gone through undefeated in their time at St Bede's. Our team was on the podium for 41 out of 55 events and we were also the U15 and U16 age group champions and won the Intermediate Cup (combined U15/U16 age groups)!" Thank you to Coaches Jess Kirk, Greg Roberts and Gavin Brown whose support of our students at early morning trainings and preparations for this team has paid off beautifully.
Congratulations to Lucian H (Year 7), who is Deputy Junior Mayor for the City of Kingston.
"I was told about this opportunity in year five, when the kids from the year before applied. I quickly applied to be in the group responsible of writing and presenting a speech for City of Kingston about how I would make the area a more inclusive and innovative space. I was chosen to be the head speaker for our speech and I did not disappoint. I got appointed the role of Deputy Junior Mayor!
The best parts of this role are all the events and citizenship ceremonies that I get to attend. One of my favourites was the opening of a kindergarten/pre-school, where Indigenous People held a smoking ceremony with healing leaves and plants.
I want to be involved in government when I grow older, maybe as Mayor, Counsellor, or even a Minister. I love having a role to do and being a main one is what I love. I feel that I would like to be a part of government because I have great presenting and collaboration skills."
As Deputy Junior Mayor, Lucian has attended the official opening of North Cheltenham Preschool alongside Mayor of Kingston, Madam Georgina Oxley, and Councillors Hadi Saab, Chris Hill and State Labor MP Mr Nick Staikos. Keep up the amazing work, Lucian!
Congratulations to our Debating Teams participating in Debating Association of Victoria (DAV) Round 2. Our teams progressed to victory in four out of our six debates, which is a truly impressive effort! All students and their mentors are commended for their hard work and dedication. Tomas P (Year 12) was again awarded Best Speaker and our A Grade Team remains undefeated!
D Grade: That phone use should be taught as a learning tool in schools
C Grade: That all young people aged 16-22 should receive a Universal Basic Income from the government.
B Grade: That all childcare centres should be funded and operated by the government.
A Grade: That we should hold company directors and CEOs criminally responsible for security breaches.

"Debating has been an enjoyable experience I've shared with my friends. I’ve learned how to make rebuttals on the fly, change and adapt my speech as I speak, and become more comfortable with speaking without a script. Overall, Debating has been great - not just educational - but fun." Jackson S, Year 9
"The debate was a good experience, speaking against Firbank Grammar, we knew it was going to be a tough. We ended up pulling through winning the debate by one point with both Sam and Oskar speaking really well. I've never done any Debating before this, but I definitely recommend that you sign up and give it a go!" Jesse D, Year 9
