Reading

In Week 5, the students were busy learning two new sounds, /y/ and /z/ as well as the heart word ‘they’. In Week 6, we learned the sounds /j/ and the short sound /u/ and the heart word ‘into’. We continue to practise our segmenting and blending skills to read words. Prep students have worked hard to use the skills to read familiar texts in the classroom.

We continued our new reading unit, Fictional Stories. Students have enjoyed listening to stories such as “The Three Little Pigs” and “Chicken Little”. Students can explain that “fiction” means a story that is made up, or not true. We also had a lot of fun identifying our favourite characters in the stories that we read, as well as the setting of the stories.

Writing

In writing, we have continued learning new sounds. We have now learned m, s, f, a, p, t, c, i, n, o, b, h, l, v, e, r, y, z, j and u. We were very excited to learn our last vowel in Week 6! The students work hard every day to form these letters correctly. In week 5, our new heart word was ‘they’ and in week 4 it was ‘into’. We practise by saying “t-h-e-y” spells they” and “i-n-t-o spells into” and using the words in a sentence. Students are working hard to include familiar heart words in the sentences that they write.

We continue to practice our 5-Star Writing, and students are writing some amazing and creative sentences lately. They have been writing sentences that link to the stories that we read in our Fictional Stories unit. With lots of practise, we will be experts at remembering to use a capital letter at the start of a sentence and a full stop at the end of a sentence, as well as using our finger spaces, finger spelling and our best handwriting.

Maths

We have spent Weeks 5 and 6 collecting data for our Data unit, and students have had a blast asking and answering questions to find out information. We explored how to ask questions and listening carefully to the answer so that we can record them in a chart or table. In Week 6, students worked independently to think of a question to ask their peers, collect data and present their data to the class.

Footy Clinic

We had the pleasure of hosting two North Melbourne AFL players on Monday afternoon! Prep students got the chance to kick, throw, and catch footballs with teachers, players and their friends! We may have some future AFL players amongst us!

Sip and Crunch

Sip and Crunch is a great way for your child to refuel on fresh fruit or vegetables during learning time. For Sip and Crunch, we ask that you add a small container of cut fruit or vegetables that is separate from your child’s lunchbox so that they can have it on their table to crunch on while learning. In addition, we also ask that you pack a bottle of water so that they can sip on this at their table during learning time.

Take Home Reading

At Tarneit Rise we have a take-home reading program. Each child will be given a day where they will change the books in their reading satchel or red prep bag with their teacher's assistance. The teacher will also be checking the journal so we can monitor how many nights of reading they have completed.

If you have any questions about this process, please speak to your child’s classroom teacher. They will be happy to help you.

Reminders

In term 2, parents/carers are asked to let their child walk into the pod by themselves to help build their independence. At the end of the day, children need to be collected from their classrooms by their parents/carers.

Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled. This helps us to get them back to you if they are misplaced.
