Grade 6 Community News

Hi Grade 6 families,

It has been great to see students continuously coming to school prepared with their reading journals filled out. Reading at home really does make such a big difference. Thank you to all the parents who take the time to go over the books our students are reading.

We are continuing our reading by studying the novel “Boy”, by Roal Dahl and his depiction of his childhood. This fascinating book chronicles the early evolution of Roald Dahl as a person, beginning before his birth with biographical information about his parents and some of his other relatives, which supports our study of the biography genre.

In Writing, we are learning about the features and characteristics of a biography. Students have learnt how an autobiography differs from biography. We have collaboratively compiled a biography of a famous person and now students are independently researching and compiling a biography of famous Australian. They will continue to use various language features, headings, and researched facts (in their own words), when completing their biographies. This unit provides a great opportunity to take the reader through the life story of the person, to amuse, persuade and inform the reader.

In Maths, we have started learning factors and multiples of fractions. Students have located and ordered fractions and decimals. They have added and subtracted fractions with both the same, and different denominators. Please ask your children to share their learning with you! We are further learning about improper fractions, decimals, and percentages.

Our Vocabulary words have been selected from our Novel Study “Boy” unit. Please test your child on what they mean, and how they can use them in a sentence.

 hoard, malignant, tweed, form.

craggy, tranquil, vessel, fjord, ravenous, apprehensive

Our next reading unit will focus on Ancient Greece and Rome. We have created a PowerPoint for students to review that will help with their understanding and learning if they would like to. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/e/2PACX-1vS7LE_1oikMxcurF1UDAC2YvYTZE63n4XAULo85Yj_vnc7i3SMzulVwjHWaz6jIoQ/pub?start=false&loop=false&delayms=3000&slide=id.g21d2fa4f415_0_1
