Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,

We are halfway through term two and students are making incredible progress in class.

Reading Reconsidered

We are nearing the end of the text Inside Out & Back Again. Students have been working hard at answering the big questions using RAP (Restate the question, Answer the question and Prove with evidence), looking at character emotions, decisions, and challenges.

Writing

Students have practiced using the skills they have learnt during their syntax lessons to write an answer to a given prompt. Students are building up to writing a historical narrative towards the end of the term using the skills they have been practicing in these written prompts.

Content

In Content, the students have continued to learn about economics. They have investigated the different types of resources used in business, natural, human and capital. They have also investigated the concept of advertising and consumer’s choices.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the students have completed their post-test for Number and Algebra General All showing the multiplication and division strategies they have learnt during the unit. Our next unit is, Location where the students will investigate location and directions on a grid referencing system.

Vocabulary

Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 5 new words each week from the text Inside Out and Back Again. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.
