Indigenous House Designs
As part of Reconciliation Week, we are thrilled to be able to unveil our new Indigenous House Designs created by Simone Thomson. Simone is the artist who created our College Values (above) and our Indigenous Garden.
Each design encompasses Flora and Fauna which are found locally on Wurundjeri Land and important to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Each design was chosen through student voice via each of the Houses. Initial ideas were presented to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and other members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. After some alterations, Simone Thomson went to work to create the following beautiful designs.
"It is my hope the school community and particularly the students find resonance with the house rebranding and that they find a new found pride with their relationship to country, our waterways, animals and plants." - Simone Thomson
Hollows House
Chose the Manna Gum tree which was a very important tree to the Wurundjeri People for food, shelter and medicine as well as the sugar glider
Monash House
Chose the Cherry Ballart which was a tree used for food by Indigenous people. Also, the tree is very important as it cannot be propagated, and we have one at school! The fauna chosen is Crimson Rosella.
Flynn House
Flynn went with the Golden Wattle (muyan) which symbolises elders and also means eel season. The fauna chosen was the Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo.
Gilmore House
Gilmore went with the Native Flax where the Wurundjeri people stripped the stems and beat them to free the fibre to make string for cord and fish nets. The oily, yellowish seeds were also edible. For fauna, Gilmore went with the iconic platypus.
We look forward to working with the students on how best we can incorporate these beautiful designs into the College.
