Maths Olympiad practice session

Some Year 7 and Year 8 students at Heathmont College are competing in the Maths Olympiad. This is a competition organized by APSMO (Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads) and is designed to challenge and extend students in school Years 7 and 8. You can find more about it here

Competition days on Wednesdays and are below. Keep an eye out for the Gazette for more updates!

  • 8th of May
  • 12th of June
  • 31st of July
  • 4th of September

This competition aims to build on the important mathematical concepts, improve problem solving and creativity, stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment, and provide an opportunity to compete against other schools and teams.

In the lead-up to the competition, students travelled to nearby Heathmont East Primary School to participate in a practice session, working with the primary school students to tackle challenging mathematical problems. Sometimes this was working alongside them, sometimes leading them, and even competing against them!

Students tackled challenging problems from past Olympiads, as well as additional problems selected by Heathmont College staff including the famous Monty Hall problem (find more about it here)!

An example Olympiad problem is below, if you feel keen, you are welcome to have a go!
