5/6 CLASSROOM

Over the last fortnight, the Gr 5 /6 students have enthusiastically immersed themselves in learning new songs and dance for the ASPA concert at the end of Term 3. Their dedication and passion are truly commendable.

In RE, the students continue to focus on life after Easter and what it means to us now as Christians. We focused on the passage of Luke 24:1-12 when the women went up to Jesus' tomb ready to prepare his body only to find it empty. The students responded to this passage by writing down questions that came to them while meditating on it. As a class, we then discussed it. I was impressed with the level of thinking the students got to. We are coming to look at the Emmaus Story in our next RE lesson.

In Maths, we have been making significant strides in the topic of Time in Measurement. Despite its challenges, especially reading an analogue clock, the students have shown great progress. They even enjoyed making their own analogue clock in class. We are also using retrieval charts to reinforce past learning on subtraction, addition with decimals and skip counting.

On Wednesday, the students were quite surprised to learn, in their Inform and Empower session, that a person needs to get off screens one hour before bed to get a good night's sleep. I heard a few mutterings amongst the students when the presenter made this point —they were surprised. I hope this helpful information is taken on board and helps our students get a better rest at night.

In English, we have been focusing on skimming and scanning text to find its meaning—this is a helpful skill when looking for a character's name, occurrence, etc., in a text.

In week four, on Monday, the students were treated to a surprise where they joined other students on DART Learning, an online live session on Creative Writing. All the students got into the spirit of things, participated in the session, and were creative in their responses to the questions asked by the host - well done showing outstanding leadership and responsibility with your answers and representing St Mary's nationally.

This session will hopefully give the student more ideas for their creative writing.

We also had a speech therapist, Georgia Donat, from the CES, come into our classroom to provide a lesson on making sentences more interesting using colourful semantics (Why? Where? What doing?), etc. The students played a game using this idea. They loved it.

Thank you to Ruby's mum Rebecca for sending in some photos of our 5/6 class leaving for camp on Monday morning.

We have heard they are having an amazing time!
