News from the Art Rooms

We have had a wonderful start to Term Two, enjoying the autumn weather! We have started our Term Two projects with vigour!

Senior School Art Room

In Grade 2 we have been exploring outside to find the changing colourful autumn leaves. We looked at colour artist Josef Albers and the use of leaves in his collage art works. We found our own autumnal leaves of different shapes and sizes and used our creativity to imagine what they could become.

The Grade 3 children have been looking at indigenous seasons from Gariwerd (The Grampians) and Wurundjeri (Melbourne surrounding area). We compared the different natural changes that are occurring around us, for example, the currawong is more seen during the Gwangal Moronn season (Gariwerd) and Warin season (Wurundjeri). The students designed a sculpture to represent the changes in the indigenous season and sculpted a clay ornament from their design.

Grade 4 have been exploring the special relationship complementary colours share. We have identified which colours look best with each other and now the students are ready to create their own complementary colour painting. The students painted a flower as the subject using primary colours and the background painted with secondary colours. The paintings look vibrant and impressive!

Grade 5 children have looked at Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal use of costume and masks in their culture. The students then compared these costumes and masks with Burkina Faso culture in Africa and their own cultures. The students then created their own mask design to represent their own culture.

In Grade 6, we are designing and constructing their own inspirational banner. The students looked at artists who have used text and inspirational quotes in their art works, for example the Robert Indiana’s LOVE paintings and sculptures from the 1960s.The students have created uplifting colourful banners that bring a positive energy to a room.

Junior School Art Room

We’ve had a very successful Term Two in the Junior School art room.  Our first portfolio art pieces have all been completed. The Prep and Grade 1 students have all continued to improve their painting skills and enjoyed mixing and learning about colour theory. They have worked incredibly hard all term to produce amazing art pieces.

The Prep children studied the art of Henri Rousseau, he was best known for his jungle fantasy pictures. The students went off to create their version of a jungle piece of artwork. They painted and printed their own paper. They drew a tiger using oil pastels and completed their artwork by hiding their tiger behind different types of leaves. They look truly magical. Their work is outstanding and I’m so proud of how hard they worked.

In Grade 1 students created a self-portrait collage inspired by artist Kehinde Wiley who is a contemporary African American painter. They painted their background using acrylic paints. They then created themselves using different types of construction paper and other materials. They completed their artwork by adding final details to make them look more personal. These look fabulous. I love each and everyone of them. Their artwork is a true reflection of their hard work.

Happy creating,

Edwina Atkins and Mavra Kotsabouikis
