Class 5 Steiner

Celebrating Learning

Kii Families,

This year the children will be brought Main Lessons that will give them a glimpse into the ancient cultures of India, Persia, Egypt and Greece.  We have begun this learning journey in ancient India, first meeting the Hindu gods of Brahma (the Creator), Shiva (the Destroyer) and Vishu (the Preserver), learning about the important role each of them plays in the world.

We then went on to hear many exciting stories involving these gods, and others, helping people to find the strength and wisdom to overcome unkind forces.  Finally, the Main Lesson was concluded with the story of Sidhartha’s journey to becoming a Buddha, an enlightened being, who deeply understood the importance of love, kindness and compassion in the world and so spent the remainder of his years on Earth as a great and revered teacher of this wisdom.

Literacy skills being developed and practised during this Main Lesson have been comprehension, and seeding, drafting and publishing independent writing.

During Reading practice lessons, we have been looking at deepening our understanding of a text with thick questions, using deeper levels of thinking, identifying main ideas and supporting details, and inference.

In Maths lessons we have been talking about the importance of having a positive maths mind.  We have discussed ideas such as ‘everyone can learn maths, ‘mistakes help us learn’, ‘questions are really important’, ‘I can always try my best’ and ‘depth is more important than speed’.  The students then had the opportunity to put these principles into practice as they persevered through problem solving challenges.  We have also been learning about positive and negative integers, rounding off numbers and are presently looking at place value.

The class has transitioned smoothly into Class Five and it has been a wonderful start to the year.
