ART

A warm welcome to all our families, especially those joining our Prep community for the first time! For those who don’t know me, my name is Antoinette Vaiano, and I am truly privileged to continue teaching art at TPS. It has been a rewarding experience, and I am excited to start another year of creativity in the art room.
In the art room this term, we revisited our Growth Mindset, focusing on how it can support students’ learning in creative ways. We discussed a variety of positive mantras that encourage perseverance and openness to learning, even when challenges arise. These mantras help create a supportive atmosphere where every student feels empowered to experiment and grow.
One of the highlights of our first weeks was a collaborative project inspired by the Surrealist game "Exquisite Corpse." In this activity, students worked in groups of three or more to create a collective artwork. The process involved folding paper into three or four sections, with each student drawing on their part without seeing what others had drawn. When the paper was unfolded, the result was an unusual and often humorous work of art! The students thoroughly enjoyed the surprise element and the opportunity to collaborate on such a fun and creative project. I’ve included some images of our students in action, capturing the excitement and teamwork involved.
In week three, we began focusing on our Surrealist-inspired art folios. Students were introduced to the works of renowned Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. Surrealism is a unique artistic style that presents illogical and dreamlike images, often combining ordinary objects in strange, unexpected ways. The students were tasked with creating their own surreal scenes, which they developed on their art folios. Their imaginations have really taken flight!
Thank you for your ongoing support of the art program. It’s a joy to witness the students’ growth and creativity, and I look forward to sharing more updates with you throughout the term!
To support student learning, parents are invited to help in the art room. You will need a current working with children check. Please sign in at the office before you come to the art room.
