Vision for Instruction in Mathematics

Explicit Instruction in Mathematics at St Peter's

As mentioned in previously, our staff are currently implementing new practices through Explicit Instruction.

In the classrooms, we use explicit instruction when introducing new mathematics content and then gradually release responsibility to students.

Teachers model mathematics problems step-by-step using guided practice and then independent practice with teacher feedback. We provide opportunities for students to explain their work and thinking in oral and written forms.

Students are learning new routines to respond to teacher instruction such as: whole class responding together, using hand signals to show their response to multiple choice questions, and using whiteboards to show their working out.
