From the Year 4 Classroom

Thank you to all the parents and care givers coming along to the Learning Conversations. The term is certainly flying by and before we know it, Easter school holidays will be here! Thank you to the Year 4 families who attended the children's Mass on Sunday. It was a great celebration made better with the children singing and joining in with the responses.
We will have a ‘preview and question’ time for camp in our learning spaces. During this time, we will see what the rooms look like, the different facilities around the camp and discuss what to bring etc. If your child still has questions after this, feel free to contact their teacher. We are looking forward to having a fantastic time at camp. How exciting that Mr Mullavey is joining us!
In Reading, we are about halfway through Leo and Ralph, and the students are very engaged with the plot. Using a class novel has been a great success, providing opportunities for deeper exploration of the text while reinforcing learning through repetition. We've been thrilled to hear insightful responses and rich discussions in our learning spaces, showcasing the students' growing understanding and critical thinking skills.
In Writing, students are exploring the Narrative genre, drawing inspiration from a class text to craft their own stories. Our focus has been on sentence structure, identifying dependent and independent clauses, and using punctuation effectively. Their stories have been carefully scaffolded, allowing them to apply their learning in a meaningful and timely way.
In Math, we have begun to work on multiplication and division equations by recognising the connection between the two. They are using arrays as a foundation to develop their multiplication and division equations. We encourage regular practice of times tables at home to strengthen quick mental recall, which will support their overall understanding. As you know, times tables are used in all aspects of life, so instant recall not only helps them in math.
In Religion, we reflected on special meals shared with family and friends by drawing and annotating their memories—who was there, what was shared, and what made the experience special. Through Scripture, they connected these personal experiences to their learning, understanding how Jesus blessed bread and wine for the first time at his final Passover meal with his Disciples. We remember this as the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. It was also the first Eucharist. We will then recall the key events of the Last Supper and retell the story on a comic strip. In the lead up to the end of term, we will reflect on the meaning of the other days in Holy Week. This will culminate in a Liturgy on the last Friday of term.
In Inquiry, we recently discussed how to show respect in different environments—whether in our learning spaces, on the playground, at home, or with adults, peers, and themselves. This week, we examined physical activity levels across different age groups and were surprised to learn that 1 in 4 students of their age does not meet the recommended activity guidelines. After reflecting on their own activity levels, they created a list of weekly physical activities and identified areas where they could improve.
