From the Year 1 Classroom

We’re almost at the end of Term 1... where has the time gone? Please remember next Wednesday the 2nd of April is a Pupil Free Day, as all staff are attending a Professional Learning Day.
Excursion
What a wonderful day we had in Albury we had on Monday. It was amazing to watch how the students conducted themselves so respectfully and safely in the community. They represented Sacred Heart extremely well and we were very proud. A big highlight of the day was our visit to the Fruit Flying Circus! It was fantastic to see all students smiling, laughing and challenging themselves in the circus activities. They had so much fun!
During our tour and creative workshop at the MAMA art museum, the students surprised us with how well they could interpret the artworks and then use these ideas to inspire their own oil pastel drawings.
Topping off our day was our visit to the Oddies Creek Playground. The children raced around laughing and playing, and it was so nice to see all the students getting along and enjoying themselves.
It was lovely hearing comments such as ‘This was the best day ever’. Thank you to Mrs Hargreaves for planning a fabulous day!!
Literacy
Over the last fortnight, we have been learning about nouns, verbs and adjectives. We have been locating these in sentences, mentor texts and trying to write super sentences. See if your child can describe what a noun, verb and adjective is!
We have been focussing on reading and spelling words containing the digraphs ‘ay’ and ‘ai’ making the long ‘a’ sound, such as play, spray, railway, rain, afraid and sprain. Students have learnt that the ‘ay’ digraph is used at the end of words, and ‘ai’ is found in the middle of a word. As you read together, ask your child to find these words and make sure they are reading the diagraph as one sound.
In writing, we have been learning how to organise our factual writing, by using headings. We have learnt some fascinating facts about Emus, including being able to report about their appearance, diet, habitat and an interesting fact.
Students are generating ‘Super Sentences’ that give their readers information about Emus. Later this week we are moving into publishing their writing and we can’t wait for the children to be able to share them all with you.
This term we have been focusing a lot on how to create a ‘Super Sentence’. In the picture above you can see what things we are looking for to create a ‘Super Sentence’.
Maths
For the rest of the term, we will be focusing on building addition and subtraction knowledge. Students will be looking at partitioning two-digit numbers and forming number bonds. For example, 25 can be split into 20 and 5. They will practise adding and subtracting numbers up to 20 and use tools to solve real-life problems.
Home Learning
We have been really pleased with the number of students who have been practising their Tricky Words at home. Here is a simple and fun game you can play at home: Set a timer and see how long it takes you to read all your tricky words. Try and beat your time the next day. If you can read them, try spelling them instead!
Some students have been challenged to work on our Vocabulary Words from our Story Book lessons. These really are super tricky! Our newest words include perfect, required and announced!
We do try to remind the students to make sure they are changing their Take Home Readers. It’s important that the students become independent in choosing their own levelled books to read at home. Just a reminder that your child needs to be reading each day at home, and we would love all Reading Diaries and blue Take Home Reader Satchels to be returned on Fridays.
Reminders- Please label all your students belongings. Mornings are getting a little colder, so if your child is starting to wear a jumper, please ensure it has their name on it.
-Students are still required to be wearing a hat for recess, lunch and sport.
-White socks and completely black shoes are our school uniform. On sports days, students can wear any runners.
