From the Year 6 Classroom

Dear Parents and Families,

We are nearly at the end of Term 1, and what a fantastic journey it has been so far! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to in Year 6 over the past couple of weeks.

Class Novel – The Silver Donkey

We are continuing our exploration of The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett. The students have been engaged in rich discussions about its themes of friendship, courage, and the effects of war. They are thoroughly enjoying the novel and are looking forward to uncovering more about the characters' journeys.

Writing Unit – Narrative & Fables

Our writing focus has been on crafting fables. Students are developing their understanding of how these short stories teach moral lessons through engaging plots and characters. We are looking forward to seeing their creativity shine as they write their own fables!

Mathematics – Area & Perimeter

In Mathematics, we have been working on calculating area and perimeter. Students have explored different strategies for solving problems involving squares, rectangles, and more complex shapes. They have also been applying these skills to real-world contexts, helping them understand their practical importance.

Big Buddies – Leprechaun Creations!

Our Year 6 students had a fantastic time working with their Prep buddies to create fun and imaginative Leprechaun versions of themselves! Using creativity and teamwork, they designed and decorated their own unique Leprechaun characters, bringing a touch of St. Patrick’s Day magic to the classroom. It was wonderful to see the Year 6s guiding and encouraging their little buddies, strengthening their bond while having lots of fun. Well done to all!

St John Ambulance Visit

We were fortunate to have a visit from St John Ambulance, where students learned vital resuscitation skills, including CPR techniques and how to respond in an emergency. This hands-on experience was both engaging and empowering, equipping our students with essential life-saving knowledge.

Reminders

  • Reading & Times Tables: Please continue to encourage your child to read 4-5 times a week and practice their times tables regularly. Both are essential for developing strong literacy and numeracy skills.
  • End of Term Approaching: With the final weeks of Term 1 upon us, we encourage students to stay focused and finish strong!

Thank you for your ongoing support. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
