Wagin Woolorama Prep

As Week 5 finishes,  our shearing team is preparing for Wagin Woolorama, along with 23 other students who will participate in the cattle, Merino, Dorset and fleece judging competitions. Students participating at the show have moved between cattle and sheep this week learning how to judge cattle, sheep and wool.

The shearing team is to meet Mr Adams and Mr Abel at the College at 5.30am on  Saturday to depart by 5.45am, then returning to College by 5pm. The remainder of the team meets Mr Watt, Mr Dyson and Mr Lawrence at 6.15am for a 6.30am departure, but will also arrive back at the College at 5pm. We're looking forward to a great day!

Mr Curran with support of other staff and students has kept the Yanmar and Big Yellow busy clearing and cleaning drains and culverts in preparation for winter. Last year we had significant rain and water flooding across and down roads with water sitting in some paddocks limiting production and causing significant damage. The team has done a fantastic job clearing the old concrete irrigation channel and generally tidying water ways in the crops and horticulture area. The shovel skills of many have been tested but the work has provided good learning opportunities.

Students have worked with Mr Olde and Ms Ferraro planting new table grapes under the shade and pruning vines. The before and after shots show the great job they’ve done.

The new weaner pigs have settled in and are doing well allowing Mr Smart and his students to focus on getting farrowing crates ready for farrowing which is scheduled for 26th  March 2025.

Having sows gives students the additional opportunity to learn about managing and handling sows and piglets from birth to the kitchen. They will also learn about AI for pigs shortly after weaning which is significantly different to AI for cattle.

Ms Parker-Davis has been busy getting the horse facilities tidied and ready to receive horses as part of the after-school student riding program. The tack has been sorted, the sheds cleaned and the arena renovations have started. We're looking forward to seeing what Ms Parker-Davis and the students interested in horses put together for the year. Remember, all paperwork must be in before horses can arrive.
