Year 5 English
This term, the “The Power of Persuasion” unit focuses on developing students' persuasive writing and speaking skills. Throughout the unit, students will explore the techniques and strategies used in persuasive texts, such as emotive language, rhetorical questions, and persuasive devices. They will learn how to identify persuasive language features in texts and how to use them effectively in their own writing and speaking.
Students will also examine different types of persuasive texts, such as advertisements, speeches, and opinion pieces, and analyse their purpose, audience, and intended effect. Through a range of activities, including group discussions, and writing tasks, students will develop their ability to effectively persuade and influence others. By the end of the unit, students will have gained confidence in their persuasive abilities and be able to apply their new skills to real-world situations.
Students will explore the picture book One Small Island by Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch. They will work through a series of activities to enhance their knowledge and understanding of persuasion, specifically linked to an environmental issue and present this in the structure of an interview to their teacher and peers.
Year 6 English
This term, the “Free SPeeCh?!” unit, students will embark on an engaging journey of persuasive language and the art of influencing and positioning responders through textual content. Through a variety of interactive activities, discussions, and analysis of persuasive texts, students will explore how authors strategically convey and communicate content to sway opinions and position their intended audience.
By the end of the unit, students will have honed their skills in recognising and evaluating persuasive strategies, empowering them to navigate the world of persuasive language with greater discernment and develop their own informed and persuasive voices. Through Ningaloo by Cindy Lane and Tim Winton, they analyse environmental themes, learn geographical inquiry skills, and ultimately develop and present a persuasive speech advocating for sustainable environmental action grounded in real geographical data.
