Year 11 Father-Son Evening
On 21 April, I attended the Year 11 Father-Son Evening with my dad; an event designed to encourage meaningful conversations and strengthen relationships. The evening also prompted us to reflect on the idea that “a boy cannot change into a man without the active intervention of older men.”
The night began with an activity in which fathers and sons discussed randomly selected topics such as poverty and climate change, before sharing their reflections with the wider group. For my dad and me, this was an important reminder to make time in our busy lives to talk about significant issues and truly listen to one another. Although we may hold different perspectives on life’s challenges, through talking about it, we can navigate issues together.
We then explored the concept of the “man box,” learning about stereotypes of masculinity that often prioritise toughness and self-reliance over kindness, empathy, and respect. A key takeaway was how these expectations can negatively influence behaviour. We were also encouraged to consider positive male role models, using photographic examples, personal stories shared by Mr Crino, and ultimately reflecting on Jesus Christ as the ultimate male role model.
One of the highlights of the evening was sharing a delicious paella dinner as a community, which provided time to relax, reflect, and connect. The night concluded with a heartfelt activity in which we wrote letters to one another, expressing why we admire, respect, and love each other, before affirming these sentiments in small groups.
Overall, the evening was a valuable and memorable experience that has genuinely strengthened the bond between myself and my dad.
