Dear Families
As we come to the end of Term 1, it is hard to believe just how much has been packed into such a short period of time. The term has been full of learning, growth, celebration and connection — all underpinned by a strong sense of community that continues to define St Mary’s. Thank you all for your kind words of support at the gate, as well as your understanding as I grow into this new role.
In recent weeks, as I have met with families enrolling for our 2027 Prep year level, one theme has consistently emerged — the feeling of belonging that is so evident in our school. That our student's know one another, care for each other, across grades, was such a big factor in many families' decision making.
Our Parents & Friends Association continues to be a driving force behind many of the opportunities we provide for our students and community. From the Welcome Drinks earlier in the term through to the Easter Raffle and sausage sizzle today, their planning, energy and commitment are remarkable.
All our student leaders have been working hard this term, but in particular I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Community and the Faith and Social Justice leaders who have been working hard to raise money for Project Compassion. They were able to count the coins and notes today, under the expert eye of finance whiz, Miss Erica, and announce that $750 has been raised thus far! An amazing effort which is by far the highest amount raised in recent years.

This term has also seen new staff join our community, and we thank them for the enthusiasm, care and professionalism they have already brought to St Mary’s. Their contribution has been evident in classrooms, playgrounds and across the broader life of the school. To Mrs Braitwaite, Mrs Schultz (returning!) and Miss Broderick, we say welcome and well done.
I would also like to acknowledge the ongoing work of our School Advisory Council, and in particular Jacqui in her role as Chair. The time, insight and commitment given in supporting the strategic direction of the school is greatly appreciated.
It has been wonderful to see our students embrace the many opportunities provided this term — from excursions and community events, to assemblies and leadership roles. A particular highlight has been the confidence shown by our youngest learners, who so proudly shared their learning at assembly. The growth we see in our students across a single term is always remarkable, and a testament to both their efforts and the dedication of our staff.

We also had the opportunity to connect more broadly with the Catholic education community through events celebrating Saint Patrick, including Mass at the Cathedral and gathering with schools from across Melbourne. These experiences remind us that we are part of something much larger — a system committed to ensuring every student is supported to flourish.

We recently welcomed music educator, composer and director, Mr Drew Lane back to St Mary's to record the final version of our new school song with the school choir. I am excited to announce that we will have a music focused song "launch" day on Thursday 18 June. Drew will be back for the day, running workshops for each grade and we will finish with a whole school concert after lunch, which will include the official launch of our school song.
Alongside this musical feast, I am pleased to announce that we have booked drama workshops with the DramaToolbox who will be working with all students across Term 2 and 3; African Drumming incursion and concert as part of the Art(s) Show Week in Term 3 and finally; Tarantella Dance workshops will be a highlight of this year's Italian Day in October.
I am pleased to announce the dates of our wonderful cake stalls for 2026:
Year 6: 4 May
Year 5: 1 June
Year 4: 15 June
Year 3: 20 July
Year 2: 3 August
Year 1: 26 October
Prep: 9 November
As we move into the final days of Holy Week and to Easter itself, we are reminded of the importance of reflection, gratitude and renewal. It is a time to pause, to acknowledge the efforts of the term, and to spend time with family and friends.
A reminder that Term 2 will begin on Monday 20th April, and students may continue to wear either full summer or winter uniform for the first three weeks as the weather transitions. Please note in your calendar our school closure day on Friday 15 May when we will be training as a staff into a new initiative, TeamTeach, which will further enhance whole school practices.
Thank you for your ongoing support throughout what has been a rich and rewarding term. I wish all families a safe and restful break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term ahead.
Take care, and may God’s blessings and peace be with each of you as we journey through the year together.
