Daily Reviews

What are Daily Reviews?

Daily Reviews are short, structured learning routines that help students revisit and strengthen previously taught knowledge. They are typically completed at the beginning of the lesson and focus on key skills such as reading, spelling, number facts, vocabulary, and prior learning concepts.

Rather than introducing new content, Daily Reviews revisit important knowledge that students have already been taught. This spaced practice helps move learning from short-term to long-term memory.

What do Daily Reviews look like at Rollins?

Daily Reviews are usually quick (5–15 minutes) and may include:

  • Rapid recall questions (e.g number facts, phonics sounds, vocabulary)
  • Short written responses
  • Multiple Choice questions
  • Oral questioning and discussion
  • Retrieval of prior lesson content
  • Quick revision of key concepts across subjects

They are designed to be fast-paced, low-pressure, and consistent across the school.

Why are Daily Reviews useful?

Daily Reviews are a highly effective teaching strategy because they:

1. Strengthen memory and retention

Regular retrieval helps students remember what they have learned for longer periods of time and reduces forgetting.

2. Build automaticity

Frequent practice of core skills (such as phonics, times tables, and sight words) helps students respond quickly and accurately without overthinking.

3. Support long-term learning

By revisiting previously taught content, students are better able to connect new learning with what they already know.

4. Identify learning gaps early

Teachers can quickly see which concepts need reteaching or further support, allowing for timely intervention.

5. Improve confidence and participation

Success in familiar content builds student confidence and encourages active engagement in learning.

What is the impact in classrooms?

When implemented consistently, Daily Reviews help create a calm, predictable start to the lesson. Students become more confident learners, teachers gain clearer insight into understanding, and overall achievement across key areas improves.

How can families support Daily Reviews?

Families can support this approach by:

  • Practising basic skills at home (reading, number facts, spelling words)
  • Asking children to explain what they reviewed at school
  • Encouraging daily reading habits

Consistency between home and school strengthens the impact even further.

Daily Reviews are a small daily routine with a big impact on long-term learning success.
