Principal's Report

Mr Phillip Gibney

Dear Parents, carers and community members,

Farewell Year 12

The final school bell has been rung for the students of Year 12 2024. This week has been all about taking time to say farewell to the wide-eyed adolescents who joined the O’Connor community some six years ago, nervous and unsure of what the future held for them, and now leaving as young adults, ready to face the world's challenges head-on. The week was a time for the students to step back, reflect and remember some of the challenging times, the achievements and most importantly the unforgettable memories that each of them have created together over the past 6 years of secondary schooling.

Celebrations this week started with students as usual letting their hair down, having some fun and enjoying each other’s company at Dumaresq Dam Reserve on Wednesday. On Thursday evening the Year level celebrated their last Mass together with family, friends and staff of O’Connor. A special thank you must go to Denise Filter for organising such a wonderful celebration culminating in a very special and heart-warming Candle ceremony.

Friday, we came together as a college community to celebrate and recognise our Yr12 graduates for 2024 with their Graduation and Awards ceremony. A very special afternoon where we take the time to recognise the achievements of all Yr. 12 graduates.

To the students remember that finishing Year 12 is just the beginning. You are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to pursue your dreams, and the world is full of opportunities waiting for you to seize. It won't always be easy, and there will be obstacles along the way, and that next obstacle starts in 3 weeks’ time, the HSC examinations. Trust and believe in yourselves, give yourself the best shot by taking the time between now and the exams to properly prepare. I believe you have the resilience and determination to overcome any obstacle and showcase the best of yourself.

Yet, as you step out into the world beyond these school walls, I want you to carry with you the lessons you've learned, the friendships you've forged, and an awareness of the core values that now define you.

Remember that success is not measured solely by grades, talents or accomplishments, but by the positive influence you have on those around you. Be confident in yourself, courageous in your pursuits, be compassionate and understanding of others in your interactions, and resilient in the face of challenges you may face. Your potential is limitless as long as you are willing to put your best foot forward, work hard and not be scared to step out of your comfort zone and make the sometimes-tough decision to take advantage of the opportunities that are presented to you. These opportunities can lead to the greatest opportunity for growth.

I have no doubt that each and every one of you can leave a positive and lasting mark wherever you may find yourself in this world.

Year 12 and all the students of O’Connor, I encourage each and every one of you to follow your passions, chase your dreams, and never settle for anything less than what you deserve. Remember the little things are important as they can make a big difference.

Lastly, can I thank all community members, especially parents, carers and students for their continued support of O’Connor Catholic College, you are what makes this school great. Thank you must also go to all the teaching and support staff at the school, who have worked tirelessly to ensure all students receive the best education possible.

Students, enjoy your holiday break and return to us safe and ready to learn.

Kind Regards

Mr. Phillip Gibney
