SATIS North v South Representative Sports Day update

On Friday 6 September, the inaugural SATIS Representative Sports Day was held for Girls' and Boys' Soccer and Basketball. Due to the relentless rain in Launceston, there was a last-minute change of venue to Scotch Oakburn College.

All games were well contested and played in good spirits. It was fantastic to have so many schools represented in both regions.

2024 SSATIS Swimming Carnival

Our St Mary's College Swim Team was in action on Thursday 29 August at the Southern SATIS Carnival. Our team did the College proud and fought hard all day against some quality competition.

SMC secured some stellar age group and team results with our U13s, U16s and Open Age groups finishing third in their respective divisions. We also finished in fifth place in the Girls' Junior (Year 7–10) Shield, which is the best result we have had in a while.

A huge congratulations to the team and coaches on a successful day. We particularly would like to thank all the students who stepped in and helped fill the holes throughout the day due to injury and illness. The students' commitment to the team and willingness to go one pace beyond is commendable and we couldn't be prouder of their efforts.

We now look forward to the State SATIS Carnival, which is taking place on Wednesday 18 September. Well done everyone and best wishes for the upcoming competition!

SMC Rowing hits the water

Year 6 Try Rowing

There was a lot of enthusiasm, and a few nerves, as our Year 6 students ventured down the New Town Bay Rowing Club last Tuesday 3 September for their Try Rowing experience.

The conditions were much more pleasant than the previous week when we had to postpone due to high winds and heavy rain.

The Year 6 students also benefitted from having a large number of parent/carer and senior rowers volunteer on the day to ensure that students were able to have an enjoyable experience both on and off the water.

The Year 6s travelled to the Rowing Sheds in two groups, with one group attending in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Each group was then divided into two smaller groups: one group enjoyed a tour of the expansive sheds and gear, learning rowing terminology and undertaking a physical test over 500m on one of the ergs in the gym.

Whilst this was happening, the other half were under the watchful guidance of Mr Dixon and Piet (coaches), who were assisted by senior rowers, Sarah Gillow (Year 11) and Ruby Wighton (Year 10). The Open Rowers and U16s provided invaluable assistance by filling various seats in the quads, offering guidance and support to the Year 6 students.

After an enjoyable morning of activities, all Year 6s were joined by our assisting rowers, and parent/carer volunteers, for a sausage sizzle lunch. After lunch, the second group of Year 6 students went through the same activities and finished off a fun-filled, yet challenging day.

Many of the Year 6 students will hit the water this Sunday 15 September to see if they would like to continue in the sport as we ramp up to the season commencing.

Try Rowing | Years 7–11

A small group of Year 7–11 students visited the Rowing Sheds last Sunday to see if rowing was the sport for them. In trying conditions, and with help once again from a number of the senior rowers, the students did an admirable job navigating their quad boats around the bay. We are looking forward to a number of these aspiring rowers continuing with their on-water work from this weekend.

On-water training

On-water training starts this Saturday 14 September (U15, U16 and Opens) and Sunday 15 September (U13 and U14). Training will start on the weekends until next term when we look to include weekday sessions before school.

Off-water training will continue through to the end of term on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are investigating running gym sessions next term with details to follow soon.

Parent/carer volunteers

Our rowers benefit immensely from our generous coach and parent/carer volunteers – we can’t row without them.

If you are able to assist either on or off the water, and you have a valid WWVP card, please contact Mr Andrew Pinelli at apinelli@smc.tas.edu.au as soon as possible so that you can complete the SMC Volunteer pack.
