This Week At OOPS
Year 1 Blackburn Lake Excursion
As a celebration of our Inquiry Unit on local animals and sustainability, the Year 1s went to Blackburn Lake on Thursday. We spent some time in the discovery centre learning about human impact, went on a nature walk, listened to a story about Penny the Picknicer and enjoyed some break time on the amazing playground. To quote one of our Year 1 students, “It was the best school day EVER!”
Year 2 Literacy
The Year 2s have started exploring persuasive texts in literacy this week, including walking in on Monday to a classroom without chairs!! As part of the hook for the lesson, students had to write reasons why their chairs should be returned, and if they were convincing enough, they received their chairs back. Thankfully, everybody managed to come up with really excellent reasons, and they included: "We should definitely have chairs because otherwise we might hurt our backs", "Bring our chairs back so we can reach our tables!", "We need our chairs back immediately, otherwise our knees will get sore, and we won't be able to do P.E.". This was a really fun activity that engaged the students and got them thinking about how they can convince an audience to agree with their opinions.
Prep Zoo Excursion
To finish off our "Living Things" inquiry unit, the Preps paid a visit last week to the animals at the Melbourne Zoo. Amongst all things hopping, crawling, swimming, swinging and jumping, the most amazing part was seeing the joy and excitement on all our Preps faces. Possibly THE most exciting day of the year for our Preps!!
State School Spectacular
After months of rehearsing the show all came together last Saturday with some outstanding performances. If you didn't get to come along over the weekend make sure you keep your eyes peeled for us on TV later in the year!
Author Incursion
Our Year 3 and 4 students had a very inspiring visit from author/illustrator Sher Rill Ng last week, known for books such as "Our Little Inventor" and "The Night of the Hiding Moon". Sher comments that many of her favourite characters to write and illustrate are young women discovering their strengths.
Run Club
This morning was the last time for Curtis to be at our weekly Run Club. Curtis came up with the idea of a weekly before school club for students (and parents) to run or walk laps of our oval, to encourage physical activity and promote a healthy start to the day.
Curtis has always made it so much fun for our students with music, lots of encouragement and plenty of fun. Thanks so much Curtis, we will miss you!
