Wow, the end of a term does really highlight how quickly time passes. Where has Term 3 gone?
It has been a very busy term with lots of learning and lots of fun for the Year 3s.
Reading and Writing:
In reading and writing students have been learning about poetry. They have been exposed to a variety of poems and have looked at structures of different kinds of poems including various poetic devices. Students have learnt various skills and techniques poets use and have applied these to writing a variety of their own poems. Some of the poems that students have been exposed to are Shape poems and haiku poems. They have also had the opportunity to identify the themes in poems and to critique poems providing a reason for their opinion.
Maths:
Students explored that a fraction represents a part of a whole. For example, if you cut a pizza into 4 equal slices and take 1 slice, you have 1/4 of the pizza. They were also introduced to the terminology of numerator and denominator.
Year 3 Team building and Zone bowling:
Grade 3 students participated in 2 days of team building activities to build on their resilience, leadership and problem-solving skills. Team building for students is incredibly valuable, helping them develop essential social and collaborative skills. They engaged with their cohort and participated in activities with each Year 3 teacher. There were lots of smiles, celebrations and happiness. The activities included:
The students also got to experience bowling, arcade games and laser tag at Zone bowling in Watergardens.
It was a fun and engaging way to wrap up the busy term.
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Grade 3 and Grade 4 Melton Network
Maths Games Day
On Friday, 6th September, a group of enthusiastic students from our school participated in the Melton Math Games Day hosted by Aintree Primary School. This event brought together students from several local schools to compete in a series of engaging and challenging math games designed to enhance problem-solving skills and encourage teamwork.
Our students, from Grades 3 and 4 took part in various activities, including mathematical puzzles, strategy-based challenges, and timed problem-solving contests. The format of the event allowed students to showcase their mathematical abilities.
The students were thrilled by the interactive and competitive nature of the games. They enjoyed the chance to apply their math skills in a fun, real-world context.
Overall, the Math Games event was a tremendous success, providing a valuable experience for all involved. Our students left feeling inspired and eager to participate in future math-related activities.

Hello families and friends!
Spring already! Lots of fun and exciting things have been happening across the Year 4 cohort.
Reading and Writing
We have begun our new unit on Poetry! Over the past few weeks, we have been exploring different types of poetry, including free verse poems, shape poems, limerick, and haiku. We have also been unpacking the different elements of poetry, including rhyme, repetition, alliteration, personification, and imagery.
We have had lots of fun writing our own poems. This unit has allowed us to express our thoughts and ideas, in a unique and creative way. We have particularly enjoyed working on our free verse and shape poems.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have been learning about fractions, decimals, and angles. We have enjoyed this challenge. We have been drawing pictures and using concrete materials to help us solve problems. We have also learnt how to use protractors to measure angles.
Science
Our unit for Science is called ‘Among the gum trees.’ We conducted an experiment, to see how different variables, such as the amount of sunlight and water, affected the ability of eucalypt seeds to germinate.

In spirit of the Paralympics, we have been researching different Paralympians and their achievements. We have enjoyed learning about the Paralympics.

In Reading and Writing, Grade 5 students have been focusing on poetry. Students have been analysing poems by identifying the author’s purpose, themes, messages and figurative language. We have also looked at different rhymes schemes and rhythms in poetry. Students have also written a variety of poems, such as Haikus, Cinquains and Free Verse. Students are wrapping up the unit by writing their own songs. Alongside poetry, we have started a novel study ‘Boy Overboard’ by Morris Gleitzman. Students are using a variety of comprehension skills to respond to the text and engage in meaningful discussions.
In Maths, the focus has been on decimals and location and transformation. Students have connected their decimal knowledge to fractions and have been looking at the place value system beyond the decimal point. We have also focused on flips, slides, turns and using language such as clockwise and anticlockwise to describe how a shape has changed or moved. Another area of focus has also been reading grid references and co-ordinates on a map.
In Science, we have conducted mini-investigations based on Isaac’s Newton theory on light. We have also looked at refraction and different sources of light.
In Health, we have looked at what makes a good friend and how friendships change over time. We have looked at health seeking strategies and situations where students can handle things independently, with a friend or with a trusted adult.
In Humanities, students have began their end of term Immigration Museum project. This project involves students researching a wave of immigration looked at in class and developing a migrant profile.
The Grade 5 students are looking forward to the Colour Run and spending all our Brookside Bucks at the SWPBS shop!
Kind regards,
Grade 5 Teachers

We cannot believe how fast this term has flown!
In Reading, we are have been analysing the second instalment, ‘Then’, by Morris Gleitzman, as a whole class novel study and within that, begun to investigate the different literature circles roles and applied them whilst reading. We have also been diving into the purpose of poetry, the authors reasonings, structures and overall themes.
In Writing, we have been creating different types of poems. We have looked into the structure of each type of poem before having a go writing our own on a topic of our choice. Come week 10, we will be collating our knowledge of poetry in order to write and perform a slam poem on a topic we are passionate about. #micdrop
In Maths, Number, we have started to link our knowledge of fractions and decimals, in order to convert between them, including percentages, to solve problems. Next term, we will use this to assist us when investigating money and financial maths, which includes finding the ‘best buys’. In Measurement and Geometry, we have been reading coordinates, before plotting them onto a Cartesian Plane. We have been able to create images using coordinates, it was great fun!
In Science, we have been investigating circuits; why and how they work and what type of energy is used to power a circuit. We engaged in a ‘lemon battery’ science experiment, where we followed a procedural to explore how different elements can conduct power and energy.
Interschool Sports has begun! Using our knowledge of the sports and skills, developed in our training sessions, we versed a couple of schools around our region. We were able to have fun, cheer on our team, show sportsmanship, and compete to the best of our ability.
Hopefully we make finals
Wish our teams luck!
There are multiple events we are eager for come term 4; Canberra Camp, buddies, graduation, high school transition and the Christmas concert!
