The Preps have enjoyed taking part in the Spatial Motor Program run by the Year 6 classes each Friday afternoon. It’s a wonderful opportunity to come together as across cohorts and engage in physical activities designed to develop gross motor skills.
Preps are enjoying learning about animals and were happy to share their favourite animal and explain why they like a particular animal the most. Next term they will be learning and writing about a chosen animal for their information reports, so their researching is well underway.
During mathematics, the Preps have been hard at work developing their addition and subtraction skills. They have been using think boards to record their thinking and understanding.

From week 7 to week 9, Year One students explore the world of Dr. Seuss using different books. We are focusing on making predictions about the books, critiquing the books, looking for rhyming words, and summarising the key events of the story.
In Writing, we are exploring the art of poetry, nursery rhymes and poems. We are learning to identify rhyming words in texts. We are also learning to use our five senses (smell, hear, feel, taste and sight) to write many descriptive words and similes to describe objects. We will be creative and write a collection of poems on our own. We can’t wait to show you our poem anthology.
In Maths, we are learning to solve addition and subtraction problems by using our fingers, number lines, unifix block and other concrete materials. Also, we learn how to collect data, create a graph to present the collected data and interpret the data.
In Humanities, we continue to focus on different countries’ celebrations, histories and cultures. We have been learning to pay respect and show our appreciation to different cultures.
In Health, we are focusing on the importance of personal hygiene. We are learning different ways to take care of our bodies, such as eating lots of nutritious food, doing exercises and keeping our hands clean,
We had an amazing excursion to Melbourne Zoo. This was a good opportunity to explore and learn the animals’ features, their habitats, foods and how they survive.

Year 2 Term 3 Highlights and Learning Updates
Term 3 has been a dynamic and engaging term for our Year 2 students, filled with a variety of exciting activities and valuable learning opportunities. From exploring new topics in the classroom to participating in hands-on projects, the students have been busy developing their skills and expanding their knowledge in a fun and supportive environment. The students followed the Olympic Games, learning about different sports, athletes, and countries. They explored the Olympic values like teamwork and perseverance and enjoyed some fun Olympic-themed activities in class!
We also celebrated the first day of Spring, enjoying the change in season with outdoor activities that helped the children connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of Spring. It’s been a wonderful term of growth and discovery!
Excursions and Events:
One of the standout experiences for students this term was our excursion to Science Works, where students had the chance to reinforce their understanding of Forces—specifically Push and Pull. This hands-on visit allowed them to see these concepts in action, deepening their grasp of the topic. Another major highlight was our Book Parade, where students dressed up as characters from their favourite books. It was wonderful to see their creativity and enthusiasm come to life.
Dressing Up for the Book Week Parade
Looking ahead, the students are eagerly anticipating the Colour Fun Run next week. This event promises to be a vibrant and energetic experience, combining fitness with fun and a splash of colour.
Reading: In our reading sessions, we have been delving into a diverse range of poems. Students have been sharing their thoughts, discussing what appeals to them, and exploring the unique aspects of different poems. Our focus has been on analysing poetry more deeply making inferences, connecting ideas, and interpreting the messages that poets convey. This approach is helping students build a richer understanding of poetry and its power to express a wide range of emotions and ideas.
A gentle reminder: reading with your child at home remains crucial. It’s beneficial not only to read the assigned home-reading books but also to explore other texts together. This practice exposes students to a broader vocabulary and language structures, and it fosters quality bonding time.
Writing: In writing, students have been engaged in crafting their own poems. They have experimented with various poetic forms, using emotive language and vivid adjectives to enhance their work. Encourage your child to keep a diary at home, where they can practice using adjectives and verbs to describe their daily activities. This not only supports their writing skills but can also cultivate a love for creative expression.
Numeracy: In numeracy, our focus has been on addition and subtraction, particularly in the context of worded problems. Students have been using number lines to support their calculations and improve their problem-solving skills. You can support this learning at home by incorporating subtraction into everyday activities, such as cooking or shopping, to make these concepts more relative and practical. Your child has been learning about maps and how to describe the location of different features using simple positional language (like "next to," "in front of," and "behind"). They have practiced reading maps, following directions, and giving simple instructions. They are also learning how to answer questions about shapes and describe how they turn (rotate). These activities help develop their understanding of space and direction in a fun and interactive way.
Science: In Science, we have been exploring the concepts of forces, particularly push and pull. They conducted hands-on experiments to see how gravity and air affect falling objects. Through these activities, the students learned how different forces work in our everyday lives and enjoyed discovering how objects move in different ways.
Humanities: In Humanities this term, we have looked at a variety of celebrations and traditions from around the world. Students have had the opportunity to share their own family traditions, providing a personal connection to our exploration of cultural practices. This exchange of ideas has allowed students to see the unique ways in which families celebrate significant events, while also highlighting the commonalities that unite diverse cultures. Through this exploration, students have gained a deeper appreciation for both the distinctiveness and shared elements of global traditions. They have learned about various festivals, holidays, and rituals, discovering how different cultures mark special occasions in meaningful ways.
In addition to exploring traditions, we have also investigated traditional games from different cultures. Students have enjoyed learning about and playing these games, which has offered them a fun and interactive way to understand cultural practices and values.
On Thursday, 12th September, we celebrated 'R U OK?' Day, our National Day of Action. This day reminds us that every day is the right day to ask, "Are you OK?" if someone around us is struggling with life's challenges. At school, we marked the occasion by wearing a splash of yellow and participating in special activities focused on kindness and checking in on each other.
As always, thank you for your continued support in your child’s education. It’s been a fantastic term, and we look forward to more learning adventures ahead!
