Decorative and Functional Art

Students taking the Decorative and Functional elective created Art Deco inspired book boxes. Art Deco is an art and design style that emerged in the 1920s and 1930s, characterised by a streamlined, geometric aesthetic, bold colours, and luxurious material. The designs are stunning, with a lot of effort going into decorating each book box.

📰 Mummification—with a Citrus Twist! 🍊⚰️

Students have been diving deep into the fascinating world of Ancient Egypt—learning about pharaohs, pyramids, and the mysterious mummification process. But this week, things took an exciting (and slightly zesty!) turn as both Year 7 classes combined for a hands-on activity: mummifying their very own grapefruit "bodies"!

Yes, you read that right! While ancient Egyptians used linen, resin, and elaborate rituals to preserve their dead, our clever Year 7 students took a creative approach—substituting the traditional body with a grapefruit (despite it being called the Orange Mummification activity 😄).

Working in teams, students carefully prepared their grapefruit mummies by removing the pulp (a messy but essential step), drying them out, and filling them with a mixture of salt and bicarbonate of soda to mimic natron—the preserving agent used thousands of years ago. Then, they wrapped their citrus creations in gauze and placed them in sarcophagi (a.k.a. Ziploc bags).

The activity was not only a huge hit with students, but also a memorable and sensory way to understand the significance of mummification in ancient Egyptian culture.

Humanities teachers were impressed with the students’ enthusiasm, teamwork, and surprising attention to embalming detail. One student remarked, “It was gross… but really cool!”—a sure sign of historical learning success.

We can’t wait to unwrap the results in a few weeks to see how well our grapefruit mummies have preserved. Stay tuned for the grand reveal.

Lawn Bowls

We've been hosting a Student Teacher this term. Jack Turner is only a couple of weeks away from completing his 9-week placement and has been a great addition to the school community. The pictures below show one of his lessons in action - Year 7 Physical Education, learning about Lawn Bowls. Looks like fun.
