Respectful Relationships - Term 2 Focus: Positive Coping & Problem Solving
This term, as part of our Respectful Relationships program, all students are learning about Positive Coping Strategies and Problem Solving. These lessons are an important part of supporting students’ social and emotional development and align closely with our school-wide focus on respectful and responsible behaviour through SWPBS.
Positive Coping Strategies
Students are learning how to recognise their emotions and use helpful strategies to manage challenging feelings such as frustration, disappointment or anxiety. Strategies may include deep breathing, positive self-talk, taking a break, or seeking help from a trusted adult. These skills support students to stay calm and make positive choices, especially when things don’t go to plan.
At home, try asking:
- “What do you do to feel better when something upsets you?”
- “Can you show me a strategy you’ve learned at school to help you calm down?”
- “Can you tell me about a time you used a positive coping strategy recently?”
Problem Solving
Students are also exploring how to solve everyday problems - both in and out of the classroom. They’re learning to identify a problem, think about different solutions, consider consequences, and make a respectful and responsible choice. This ties in with our SWPBS expectations, especially when it comes to managing social situations in a positive and safe way.
At home, try asking:
- “What do you do when you have a problem with a friend?”
- “Have you ever had a problem that you solved by asking for help? Who did you ask?”
- “What steps do you use to solve a tricky situation at school?”
