On the farm
Year 8 Tech mandatory (Agriculture) class have been showing incredible cattle handling skills the last few weeks and the results are starting to show. So pleasing to see the skills, confidence, teamwork and tolerance shine through within the students.
Shearing School
Nine dedicated and enthusiastic young men recently attended a 5-day shearing school at the Glen Innes Show ground kindly supported by TAFE. Here they gained valuable skills such as loading a hand piece and sharpening equipment. They begun with different crutching techniques and by the end of the week were able to successfully shear an entire sheep. A commendable achievement and all students should be proud of how they conducted themselves throughout the week.
Prime Lamb Success
Glen Innes High School achieved outstanding carcass results at the recent Northern Schools Prime Lamb competition which this year was held in Glen Innes.
Lambs were to be entered in pens of 3, with each school to select one lamb to be entered as an individual led lamb. Overall there were approximately 130 lambs entered into the competition. Of the 4 GIHS pens entered, three of them were in the Middleweight section, with one in the Heavyweight class. GIHS cleaned up the Middleweight division with 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed carcasses, with the Heavyweight pen receiving a 4th place ribbon.
Meanwhile, the individual led lamb was Champion lamb on the carcass scoring a commendable 85.8 points out of 100, while the 2nd placed lamb scored 75.9 points.
Sustainability Day
On Wednesday the 14th of May, students from years 10 and 11 Agriculture participated in the Local Lands Services Sustainability Day at the UNE Smart Farm, along with 120 other students from 7 other schools.
Students moved through six different stations, covering topics such as farm planning, soils, biosecurity, shearing, Aboriginal culture and livestock, engaging in practical activities at each station.
Special mention to Maddie Tarrant, whose fleece throwing was one of the best of the day, and to Danika Elliot, who won a Yeti water bottle at the livestock station after being able to correctly identify all the animal feed grain samples.
A huge thankyou to LLS and UNE for an excellent day.

Chemical Certificate
A small number of Agriculture students recently completed their 2 day Chemical Certificate where they learnt about the legal requirements when transporting, storing, mixing and handling chemicals. They looked at various PPE and chemical application equipment and looked at the importance of calibrating equipment and maintaining in appropriate condition. Thank you to TAFE for helping deliver the course for students here at school.
