Books,books,books!!!

We've been very fortunate to be able to purchase a wide range of new reading materials to further engage and support our students in their learning.

The Junior school will benefit from a fabulous injection of hundreds of Take  Home Books. The Senior school will also enjoy an exciting range of  contemporary literacy resources, bringing new energy to small group Guided

reading sessions and allowing for quality shared and independent study. This

new range focuses on the development of different comprehension skills and will

certainly be the stimulus for some critical thinking and rich discussion amongst

our students.

We have talked to our students about the importance of caring for these new resources in our learning areas. We encourage you to support this continued care in your homes, so that we may enjoy their many benefits for years to come!

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and St John’s Mitcham is excited to be participating.

Students at St John’s were all given their logins in the last weeks of Term 2 and hopefully have been enjoying reading in the rainy days over the holidays. Please encourage your children to enter their books onto their Challenge page or ask for help in the classroom to do so.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the

importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge

We look forward to supporting this challenge in the lead up to Book Week. Watch this space for details of student progress…and happy reading!

Marathon Club

COMMECING : Tuesday 23 July ...Next Week!

St John’s Marathon Club starts at 7:45am each Tuesday and Thursday morning, finishing at 8:30 am. Marathon Club is fun because you get to hang out with your friends and have a good time. It’s good for your health and it helps with your fitness. It is a great way to exercise. You also get a breakfast of toast and milo. On your toast you can have butter, jam or vegemite!!

Every Tuesday and Thursday ( weather permitting!) we walk or run up to Halliday Park and do laps. It’s only $10 each term to help pay for the breakfast. There’s also a member’s T-shirt that you can buy for $10 to wear while you are running. (Students should change into their school uniform before school starts.) We’d love to see you in Term 3!

Love from

The Marathon Club.
