Religious Dimension

Welcome to Term 3

Welcome back to a new term at St. John's. I am praying that all families have had a well deserved rest even though it has been a chilly two week break and start to this term.

At the end of Term 2 our teachers worked hard to begin planning our Religious Education and Inquiry units of work. With our concept of 'Courage' at the fore front of our planning our  teachers used the Religious Education Framework to gather ideas and learning tasks. Our junior students, in Prep - Year 2, will begin our unit in RE by learning about the parts of the Bible and reading stories about families in the New and Old testaments. Our students will develop an understanding of the importance of prayer in developing their trust and relationship with God.

Our students in Years 3 - 6 will be investigating and developing a deeper understanding of Catholic Social Teachings. The students will also explore how using their gifts from the Holy Spirit can help others who are working in the mission of the church.

Jesus send out the Twelve - Mark 6:7-13
Jesus send out the Twelve - Mark 6:7-13

Mark 6:7-13 was last Sunday's Gospel reading and focuses on Jesus sending out his twelve disciples. This scripture ties in beautifully with our student learning in RE this term.  Jesus sent out his disciples with nothing but a staff and sandals, to spread the good news. They were told to bring nothing extra, no extra clothing or food, but the confidence and power to heal others in their journey. Imagine in today's world being told to go and help others who are in need and having these restrictions. You can not bring a phone, extra snacks, a spare pair of shoes or extra layers of clothing, just in case. Jesus believed in his disciples so much that he reminded them to have the courage to believe in God's word and that they would not be alone. Jesus gave his disciples authority over all so that they could heal, perform miracles and overcome evil.

As Catholics, how do we remind each other that we are not alone, to trust Jesus who works within us, can help solve our problems and setbacks.

  • I wonder if there is someone who reminds us to be courageous Catholics?
  • I wonder if we know someone who could do with our help?
  • I wonder if we help even when we don't feel prepared or courageous?
  • What is stopping us?
