Learning through the Parables

In the gospels, we find that often Jesus taught in parables. Parables are stories that use well known things to help us understand the kingdom of God. Jesus told stories about things in nature, such as seeds and soil, grapevines and birds, because all of his followers were familiar with them.

Scripture

'Jesus said, "What is God's Kingdom like? What story can I use to explain it? It is like what happens when a mustard seed is planted in the ground. It is the smallest seed in all the world. But once it is planted, it grows larger than any garden plant. It even puts out branches that are big enough for birds to nest in it's shade.'

Mark 4:30-33

Reflection;

In what ways does God's kingdom begin small, like a seed, and grow? What did Jesus mean by the birds that nest in the shade? What kind of shade does the kingdom of God provide?
